michael majchrowicz reviewed Pihea Trail to Alakai Swamp

Diverse hike with changes in terrain, views and plant life. Starts on a broad dirt path with amazing views of the north coast comes to trees and more dense foliage with wood steps and planks. There are two pretty steep sections before getting to the swamp. It is the highest swamp and rain forest in the world! But don’t believe the lies; it is only the 8th wettest place in the world ;) still, don’t forget to bring plenty of water.

Good hike with some steep sections, and incredible views from the peak. As you get higher, the trail is more exposed, so bring enough water. There is a smaller path turnoff to the right, just before you drop down on the fire road about 1/2mile from the parking lot, where there are two hot spring pools. Fair amount of poison oak along that stretch, but very cool to see the springs.

Some gorgeous views from along the ridge, although at the moment the trail portion along the creek going out from Will Rodgers is overgrown and not easily passable. Can be a cool setting but it is tough going along the creek.

Spray paint on EVERYTHING. And the concrete stairs and fire road take away from the nature setting. Certainly good for a quick elevation change, but not too esthetically pleasing.

I think it is important to experience the history of this place. Very thought-provoking and invokes wrenching emotions. The visitor center has great displays and a compelling documentary in their theater. Walking the site gives you a better impression, but a lot of the beauty has been lost (the gardens and parks). What cannot be taken away is the amazing views of the mountains on either side. The walk is easy - this is not as much about a hike as it is experiencing history.

A short hike considering the incredible views you get. Starts off flat from the parking lot, then involves some steep uphill sections for about 3/4mi. The next section is nice and flat through the trees, then a moderate uphill section before you have to scramble up the granite dome. Stay to the left for an easier path to the top.

Beautiful hike past May Lake and then a scramble up a cairn-marked path. Stunning views! The last bit to the peak involves climbing up granite boulders.

Beautiful setting with tons of people running, walking and biking. Area with gymnast rings, bars, ropes etc.

An amazing, AMAZING hike, but be prepared. This is a relatively short hike but the elevation makes it quite a challenge. Best to stay somewhere the night before where you can acclimate to the elevation. Altitude sickness is a definite possibility. Check online forums before you go to see the conditions and can be properly prepared, as portions of the trail will always have some snow/ice. Bring a way to filter water. Make sure you have enough salts.

I've done this hike about 7 times and it never gets old. Such beautiful scenery and amazing trail. Going from the mountains to the ocean so mostly downhill but always more uphill than I remember. For a long hike, so far to me this is as good as it gets. Only done it as a day hike, although there are two potential campgrounds along the way. If you run the flats and downhills you can finish in less than 6 hours. Or you can take your time. Refill water at Big Basin HQ.
