Very isolated. Amazing views and both the sunset and sunrise are breathtaking. The main road is really sandy and is mostly a river washout. The wildlife at dusk is majestic. Many nooks and shoot offs to explore. I don't think you can do this all in just one hike. Great camping as well.

Firstly, a very breathtaking drive to the middle of nowhere. Then you turn right towards waste management station. Notice there is no real parking just widening of the road right before the bridge. The entryway is a little snug for bigger hikers but if you go follow the fence you can just go around.

Wide sandy walk ways, Many trail markers made of rocks. Be warned it seems like some people have left numerous broken beer bottles so watch your canines.

The petroglyphs are amazing, before you go take a moment to research this place to get a little backstory.

If you go on a Jewish holiday you may see visitors to the sight though it is so isolated you may not.

The "trail" we took was amazing and totally worth the boulder crawl! The trail is not clearly marked and the land is an atv/ dirt bike area. The flyer at the information post advertised a dirt bike trial tournament, so there were a lot of crisscrossing well worn trails that lead to this confusion. SO instead of going to the right to the actual trail we went left and found beautiful canyons. Stay away from the dried river bed it is a breeding ground of aggressive mosquitoes. The long walk to the trail head is an uphill hike on very loose sand.

Very beautiful. We went very early in the morning and heard coyotes so if you bring your dog please keep a leash on him. The abandoned strip mine was not seen this time, maybe we didn't know where to look or maybe we were taken with the other scenery. I will say there are a few sketchy areas with very lose rocks.

Very flat and wide enough to accommodate both bikers and walkers. There are 2 trails, one on either side of the river but the wide dirt "lower" trail is trafficked by horses so proceed with caution. Trail says it is not open until 7am but when we showed up the gate wasn't locked.

Very rocky in some locations so hiking poles do help. Moderately trafficked until the second volcano and most people stopped for the peak and then backtracked to the parking lot. Great view of ABQ below around the 2nd peak.

A scenic trail with great views of ABQ and the Sandis. Majority of people where mountain biking, so it is important to check behind you as you hike- but most were thankful when we would step off the trail for them to pass. There are 2 inner paths you can take to shorten the walk if need be, so you can really hike your own hike.
