Miah Gilbertsen reviewed Ben Nevis Mountain Path

This was a fantastic hike!! It starts out quite crowded and relatively easy with switch-backs. The crowd drowns out as the hike continues because it gets progressively harder and more challenging. You'll pass a beautiful and peaceful alpine lake about a third of the way through. From there on it's nearly all scrambling til the top, with snow for the last bit so come prepared!! Wear solid shoes, bring lots of water, and start out early because weather can get bad quickly as the day goes on. Side note: in the time period that I was hiking, there were two helicopter rescues for people that were being dumb and careless- climbing where they shouldn't have and being stupid. Don't be dumb and careless and stupid. :)

Miah Gilbertsen reviewed Vernal and Nevada Falls via the Mist Trail

This is a beautiful hike with rewarding views almost the whole way up and I would definitely recommend it. It's all uphill with plenty of stairs once you get close to the falls. At the top of Vernal falls, there's a lake called Emerald Lake, with a natural rock slide that everyone was sliding down. It was freezing but worth the experience and cool down after such a great hike! I gave this hike 4 stars instead of 5 because, while it is so beautiful, it's incredibly crowded and that sort of took away a little bit of the specialness to me. Still a great hike!

This is a great hike! It's called four mile hike but is actually 4.6 miles one way...and, let me tell you, I want credit for that 0.6 miles! This hike is exhausting because it is 99% uphill but it is, undoubtedly, breath-taking. every view is a stunner. Be prepared for 5-8 miles round trip and worked out quads! The view at the top (Glacier Point) and the exhilaration of conquering a challenging hike makes it all worth it.

This is a great hike and reminds me of a short snippet of a trail you may find on the west coast. It can be nearly vertical at times but it's short lived and it rewarded by great views of the valley or the peaceful beauty of the forest.

I said it in my Kalalau review and I'll say it here, too. This hike will set a standard for your following hikes. The trail is extremely difficult: sometimes steep, often tight, and you even have to jump rocks over the rushing creek many times. The reward is like none I've ever experienced before and one of my fondest memories of all my memories. The waterfall is breath-taking. As is the water temperature the second you step one foot in. I assure you, though, there is no greater feeling than feeling fresh mountain water from the tallest swampland in the world after such a sweaty, dirty, and exhausting hike. You MUST swim when you make it to the falls; DON'T let the freezing temperature hold you back from experiencing true Hawaiian natural splendor. It's so special. Swim beneath the falls and let it massage your back. Take in the smell and the bright green moss against the dark, wet rock; this is a view I'll always remember. Careful while swimming to not cut your leg or swim into rocks below the surface of the water beneath the falls: there are many and it's an unpleasant surprise. Thankfully, the cold water quickly numbs the pain and stops the bleeding!

    You must do this hike.
Good luck turning your back to the falls and walking away.

Rattlesnake is a great hike. It's pretty well-trafficked but because it's a nice trail and a good workout with a great view! I recommend!

Miah Gilbertsen reviewed Na Pali Coast (Kalalau) Trail

This hike will set the standard for all other hikes you take. The trail is heavily trafficked but that's because it's stunning, exhilarating, and rewarding. I stopped the Kalalau trail at the beach and then made our way on the Hanakapi'ai Trail to the waterfall; I couldn't stress enough to be my favorite reward of any hike. It is simply stunning.

Miah Gilbertsen reviewed Cinque Terre Trail to Porto Venere

I only hiked from Monterosso to Vernazza and it was a constant stunner. It's legitimately one of the most exhausting hikes, in terms of the trail: it's legitimately straight up stairs for the vast majority of the hike. But it's not without the constant reward of gorgeous views. The ocean was always on one side and even when it isn't, the trail is made more unique by little homes sprinkled throughout the mountainside with grape fields and even a little homeless cat community (make sure you bring snacks for these guys; they'd grearly appreciate it).

At the end of this hike, treat yourself to a glass of red and fresh fish on a patio in Vernazza. One of my greatest memories!

Miah Gilbertsen reviewed McAfee Knob Appalachian Trail

if I could give McAfee a 3.5, I would. It's more than a 'decent outing' but I'm not sure if I'd do it again. the first half of the hike is on a very wide trail and it's fairly trafficked but that's because it's easy to reach from the road and very lovely through the trees. The second half is more difficult and less trafficked. The view from McAffee Knob is gorgeous and worth the length of the hike. The blue ridge mountains were dreamy; the AT never fails.

Miah Gilbertsen reviewed Afton Park Trail

Afton is a great State Park with wonderful pack-in campsites. We stayed in #18 and felt all alone. The hiking itself is personally nothing to write home about. Most of the trails are on a mowed path through prairie, which is just fine for children or those folks not in it for the thrill, necessarily. There is one loop to the southwest of the park that is fairly up, through forest, and slightly more up and down.. I liked this trail but short and, frankly, goes by far too quickly! We were able to see many deer in our couple days camping and hiking here, probably 6 or 7 total!

Miah Gilbertsen reviewed Slaughter Gulch (First Outlook)

Slaughter was a great hike! It's easy to get to but not so easy to find. The trail starts through forrest without any view, but with beautiful trees and a crystal clear creek. After clearing the trees, it's almost directly vertical and up rocks-not for the scared of heights or out of shape. The ascent is 1500 ft in the first 1.3 milea but the reward is beautiful. I could've sat up there for hours!

Miah Gilbertsen reviewed Winner Creek Trail

I was decently surprised by this hike! It's elevation isn't much but the hike through the forrest is stunning. It's close to Alyeska Resort and pretty easy so it's decently trafficked but this hike still manages to make you forget that you're within a 10 minute drive of Girdwood and not out in the middle of nowhere. The waterfall cascade is beautiful and powerful. The hand tram across the river is exhilarating and exhausting. I loved this hike!

Miah Gilbertsen reviewed Olomana Trail (Three peaks)

I only completed the first peak this time but it was by far one of the coolest hikes I've ever completed with a great 360° view, including the ocean to one side and more mountains to the other. It's also one of the most diverse hikes I've done, with rock-climbing, a beautiful forest, and lots of vertical alpine climbing. This isn't for the out-of-shape or faint-hearted but is sooo rewarding.

Miah Gilbertsen reviewed Mount Healy Overlook Trail

This hike was awesome. It begins relatively easy but gets much more difficult as it gets higher into alpine. It's lightly trafficked and the view from the overlook is breath-taking. A narrow foot trail continues on for another half mile or so but this summit was well worth it and perfectly enough.
