Not exactly the best birding trail (almost no birds in 12 hours) but one serious experience. The route claims 18 miles but if you make it around the lake and all the way up the mountain it was closer to 25 for us. We did the entire trek (there and back) in about 12 hours and I will recommend heavily you bring trekking poles or a stick for the end and the mountain. It's very beautiful and probably better enjoyed over 2 days. I'd say you will get many more worthwhile landscape shots than animals so no need for the 10lb birding lens like I brought. It's a very challenging hike in total distance and total vertical climb so make sure you're prepared. There is about a mile climb on ice and loose rock up the ridge so be careful and dress appropriately. You should definitely be able to do over 15 miles in one trek easily if you even want to attempt this in one day. The total vertical climb registered for my tracker over the entire trip was around 6500ft.

As far a scenery is concerned this is a fairly average desert trail with a really good view at the end. The fact you can drive to the top makes it slightly less rewarding but the climb is respectable on the steep side. Nice place to watch the sun go down or talk to some fellow hikers as there are always quite a few. There are a few interesting birds and other wildlife but don't expect numbers like more remote trails.

A few key things to keep in mind before attempting this trail. First, it's in the Avimor subdivision and you want to take the first left after the community center. The trail entrance will be on you right and there is a parking lot relatively close or you can park by the community center pretty easily. AT&T doesn't seem to get service in that area and apple gps will put you at the community center instead of the trail. The second big thing is there are a ton of bugs on this trail; you'll see horrendous swarms (worse than Ponderosa State Park) of mosquitoes at the beginning, so many crickets the grass moves and the biggest grasshoppers I've ever seen further in. Wear bug spray in the later/earlier hours for that beginning but rest assured most of the path just has a bunch of stink bugs and grasshoppers. The trail itself (after the initial portion) is very pretty. Lots of wonderful scenery and wildlife. You'll hear owls and see lizards and deer. It's mostly by running water which is relatively forested over but is similar to a canyon hike. There are many birds but they are more timid than most parks so bring a big lens if you want any great shots. Personally felt like my 300mm was about 200mm to short for anything decent.
