50% inclines!?!?! Ouch! This trail hurts.

Plan on spending a lot of time if you want to get to Fern Lake and have less than Olympian-cardio. I only had two hours. Enough time to get as far as the waterfall at the Yost/Fern split in the trail and return. The waterfall was spectacular.

The trail was narrow and berm was loosey-goosey. Took a spill. Hiking pole arrested slide. Maybe should have done JL Brew Co AFTER the hike and not before.

Melanie is right. It was hot.

But it wasn't hard. Because I went FROM Horseshoe Lake (via McLeod) TO Red's Meadow (via Rainbow Falls). After McLeod, it was either flat, or all downhill, which provided spectacular views of Red's Meadow because of the previous fire that cleared out a lot of old growth. Too bad about the fire. But I do like my photos.

Then took the bus from Red's Meadow to Main Lodge ($8! TIP: Tell the driver you are exiting before the Monument exit and you don't have to pay to board. Then linger on the bus and exit where you want.) the Tram to the Village, and Uber to Horseshoe Lake to get the car. All in time to get pie at East Side Bake Shop before 3pm.

    Winner winner chicken dinner.

Hiked today. Not for the AAA Club hiker - which I am. Trail had lots of scree, snow, and eventually defeated at the cross over, where there once was a concrete bridge, due to the high level runoff.
Definitely bring water moccasins if you want to cross over and get to the first lake.
Regardless the scenery was spectacular and worth my 8 mile out-and-back.

Easy scenic trail to enjoy views of the lake and woods and let the legs recover from skiing or altitude while being able to enjoy an apres hike brew at June Lake Brewing Company
