Melody Butler reviewed Kings Bluff and Pedestal Rocks

This trail is so beautiful! It was our second visit to these trails. We were here back in the summer and I have to say the fall is a much better time to come. The rock formations are amazing! Be sure that you go down below and explore the caves near the pedestal rocks. They are so cool! I would like to see the forestry department field on the trail around the base of these two trails. There is just so much to see. There was lots of water flowing today. I definitely recommend these trails!

Enjoyed this trail. Wish it hadn’t been foggy. The views would have been beautiful otherwise. Be sure to bring 3 dollars with you to use the trail.

FYI. Make sure you bring 3 dollars to pay to hike this trail. The park attendant says it’s a 60 dollar fine if you don’t pay. As far as the trail is concerned. It wasn’t worth the 3 dollars or the drive to it. I did not like this trail at all. It was confusing because it’s actually Trail was not labeled. It is actually part of the west aide of the shores loop trail. The trail is VERY rocky. It was not cleared out well at all and parts were extremely narrow. We finally turned around and came back out because it didn’t feel safe. I have hiked hundreds of miles of trails this year and have loved it but this one is by far the worst experience. I do not plan to be back.

This trail takes you up over the hatchery. There is an overlook above the spring but really you can’t see much of the spring. Overall I wasn’t too impressed by this trail. It was a good climb however.

Hiked this trail this morning. I would start by saying that it was a great trail. BUT it is not a good trail for very young kids. It is very steep. Pretty much you go straight up. It levels off a bit then you go straight down. The walk down was a bit slick and you have to be very careful. Saw a family walking in on our way out and I was genuinely worried about the young boy they had with them that was having a very hard time keeping his footing. This trail is an interpretive self guided trail so be sure to get a white pamphlet from the nature center so you will know what they are wanting you to see at each station. There are three small caves on this trail that they will let you go into. My favorite part was the last station where the Devils kitchen is. This trail definitely gives you a workout but was fun overall.

Hiked this trail this morning. We started at the Chinkapin Nature Center. After walking the trail I definitely think this is the best place to start. Be aware that the first part of the trail is pretty steep and you will get a good workout but it is well worth it. The fire tower is no longer above the tree line as it was put in in the 30’s but you are allowed to climb it and you still get the feeling of being very high. Keep on traveling around past the fire tower and you will encounter a good downhill climb. Then a beautiful view of a bluffline and then the glades. Near the end you get a short walk along the river before it comes out in the campground. With a short walk back to the nature center. As was said by earlier posts you do have to cross the highway a couple of times but personally I don’t think it took away much from the overall experience. It was a great trail with lots to see.

Definitely almost 10 miles. I enjoyed the trail. However the rocks were very hard on the feet after a while and I have good hiking shoes Saw a nice view of the lake as well as many other interesting beauties of nature. Was definitely peaceful.

Soo...we attempted this trail last weekend. Got about a mile in and saw the biggest rattlesnake I have ever seen. It was on a narrow curve in the trail. It was unhappy and it had no intention of sharing the road with us. Unfortunately we decided it was safer to turn around. Hopefully we can attempt it again someday. But Rattlesnake food is not something I want to be. I suggest keeping a watchful eye on this one for now!

Enjoyed the trail though it was a little disappointing to not have any views from the top. I would have a map as their are multiple entry points for this trail. Enjoyed the self guided tour of the trail. Still trying to figure out why there is a water meter in the middle of the woods on the trail....the things that make you go hmmm. Overall nice easy trail.

Have to say this trail was a bit of a disappointment after the amazing trip on the rim trail. To me it was too much like walking up my dirt road. Saying that it was wide and relatively easy and I wasn’t as worried about seeing a snake. There aren’t a lot of views on the trail but there is lots of history. Would love for the park to someday bring some of that history to life. I did find that part interesting. Was surprised to see Fern lake on the path but really wish they would consider cleaning it up a bit. All in all it is a good workout just not as exciting since their weren’t as many views. I did love getting a view of the rim trail to see how high I was the day before.

We hiked this trail last weekend. It is by far one of my favorites. So many beautiful views even in the middle of summer. There was just enough challenge without being too hard. I don’t recommend bringing pets or young children to this one but is absolutely AMAZING!

Hiked this trail today. We ended up going close to 7 miles round trip. The trip down to the bluffs is pretty rocky so you .definitely need good shoes and some poles would be good too. It is mostly downhill in and mostly uphill out. But so worth it! We didn’t go the whole way in the goat trail but the part we did see was pretty amazing and we saw some amazing rock formation in the bluffs. One part looked like some kind of cave dwelling the view of the buffalo river was also pretty spectacular as well. I would like to come back in the fall when there aren’t as many trees blocking the view on the way to the bluffs.

Our hike was almost 6 miles on this trail. It was nice with lots of small trails connected. Saw some cool mushrooms, a box turtle, frog, salamander, and some other rock structures. Be sure to snap a pic of the map at the entry point before you go in so you know which way to go. There are other paths that will make the hike shorter if you like.

This trail wasn’t too difficult. It had some beautiful mushrooms along the way. I was disappointed at how poorly maintained it was. Grass was pretty high on several parts of the trail.

Did this trail yesterday. We started at timber Ridge Trail because they were doing some work at beginning of Long Point. So glad we did. Taking the longer route it ended up being about 5 miles in all but the view at the end of Long Point made it all worthwhile. The view was breathtaking! We did take the Longview trail out since it was later in the day otherwise it would have been much longer. So glad we did not miss this one.
