McKenzie Schoenthal reviewed Burstall Pass Trail

This is a great hike and I definitely would recommend! The first trail to the valley is pretty flat and covered and great for biking. It’s more of a long walk then a hike at this point.

Once you get to the open valley it gets a little tricky trying to follow the trail signs to the other side. I recommend downloading a copy of AllTrails map to help you through as that’s the only way we made it. The valley gives incredible views of the mountains but be warned there is ALOT of water to walk through and many heavy streams to jump so wear water proof shoes. Especially right now it is very wet.

The next section of the hike is a steady uphill climb to the top. This is covered so not a lot of worry with the sun but lots of bugs as motivation to keep moving. Bring that bug spray! Once you get to the top it is a lot better so it’s worth it going quick! The top gives an amazing view of the valley and the ridge. There are a few more hikes that branch off from the top however any camping or trail riding require permits for Banff National Parks.

I would say this is a great moderate hike for any experienced or “getting back into it” hiker. I would definitely recommend going early and bringing your family or pets. Also I think his would be amazing in the fall with the larches! Round trip 4.5 hours with stopping for lunch.

I would recommend if you are planning on doing this hike to do it later in the summer or early fall before the snow. I did it in July and the snow was so heavy we could not find a trail. Unfortunately it also was very cold and with it being quite open for the majority of the hike wasn’t as enjoyable as it should have been. I will definitely try this hike again but next time with poles, late in the summer, extra layers and water proof shoes!

We did this hike about 3 weeks ago and it was great. I would consider it a fairly easy hike with a steady incline the entire way and nothing too challenging. The most challenging part of this hike was on the way up there is little tree cover at some points so definitely bring sunscreen and a hat. The bugs are really bad this year too on this hike so it was a quick lunch and go at the top. There are 4 lakes so make sure to keep going (as we missed the last one). This is a great spot for fishing and you can see right through the lakes they are so clear! One final recommendation is go early! It is a popular spot for family’s and pets so if you don’t want to be annoyed by crowds aim to get there for 8 or earlier.

I highly recommend this hike for beginners or anyone who has had a few months off hiking and needs an easy hike to get back into the swing of things! Round trip 5 hours with stopping for lunch.

We hiked from the Barrier Lake parking lot up to the lookout and back down without doing the loop in 3.5hrs. The trail is extremely icy for the last 1km so I highly recommend cleats and hiking poles. There is a second lookout you can climb to but due to wind and the amount of ice was not accessible for us. Overall this is a great hike and I highly recommend for a quick short day trip. It gives you incredible views at the top that do not disappoint! I would rate it on the easy side of moderate and would say it's one of my favourites for sure!

Ha Ling is a great hike but definitely a challenging one. I completed it in the middle of April as a sunrise hike and it was great! It's very steep and was still covered in snow most of the way so I highly recommend good shoes/poles. Take lots of water and snacks because it is a workout! I would highly recommend as a sunrise hike as the view of Calgary and Canmore is incredible from the top. It's about a 4hr round trip in winter without cleats or poles (and stopping to enjoy the view). Highly recommend sunrise but make sure to be prepared and go with an experienced hiker.

This is a great little trail perfect for photos and fresh air. The trail runs around the lake so there is no incline and is great for a quick jog or run with the dog! We went in November and there was not a soul out there so it was very peaceful! Wasn't planning to hike so we ended up walking around the lake in uggs and were fine. A little muddy by the cabins but after 2hrs it was worth the walk! Definitely recommend even just for the view.
