Some good views, water for the dogs in streams, but a few spots the route can get confusing and I ended up off trail for a bit. Bring a lot of water and when it says 'hard' trust it is, you're gonna end up stopping a decent bit. Some bear scat at the top but nothing other than that. Made it to North Crest trail and turned around and came back - use a stick coming down to save your ankles. There are better trails with better markings and consistent views in the Sandias hence the 3 stars. Also, trails aren't dog parks...PLEASE LEASH YOUR DOGS!!!!

Great hike. We parked at the base, up through the entrance, and we took a right at the split. There is bear activity, so keep the dogs on trail. We were about 50 feet from a bear in the brush, he was barely visible. A really great scree field and some amazing burn areas to view.
We made it to the top, took the path to the peak, hung out at the peak, then descended.
This is where I have to strongly urge you DO NOT FOLLOW THE PATH UNDER RECORDINGS. Follow the marked trail under maps. This is a burn area, it needs to recover, and coming down from the peak off path, you know you're in a burn area - it's nothing but downed trees and briar thickets around the streams. If you follow the route that is under recordings, you run the risk of getting injured (because we had someone in our group do it and got cut up bad). Stay on the trail, it's there for a reason.

Seems longer than what is listed, came out at 11+ with parking lot in and out. Considering the snow and ice at this point going forward I'd recommend crampons or something similar. The top was anti-climatic but views going up are amazing. Park staff is great!

Definitely glad for the cool weather to do this in. After the second dotted line Domingo Baca Route this starts to get tough, at the crash site it starts to get hard, past it seems impossible and getting to La Luz was an adventure. Use the waypoints on the app to find the crash site, they are accurate. Bring extra protein bars and think about multiple 10-15 min breaks then 5 min burst if you want to complete this to La Luz. The streams provided plenty of water for the dogs throughout.
As for the boulder with the rope near the tram lines - don't get fixated on the rope. I was able to get two 70 pound dogs up and down that spot because I didn't use the rope, instead of grabbing it, I just took my time on the approach to the right, then up over the two large 'steps', one to the right, one to the left of where the rope comes down. I saw people struggling up the rope and other people just climbing around it. Be creative on that part, because eventually that rope will break.
Can't wait to do it again - after my legs recover.
