Matt Pargett reviewed Whiteface Mountain Summit Trail

Whiteface is a fantastic hike. As others have said, once the trail starts it is a constant uphill hike, which makes sense since it's a mountain..but still don't expect too much level terrain to rest your legs on. I started from the ASRC and it looked like parking filled up around mid-morning or so.

Great hike with awesome views from the top. Not too much mud as of today, just small sections of it. Aside from the black flies, ugh, a great place to spend the day outside. Lots of parking at the trailhead too.

Great views from the top. The middle elevations were really starting to melt on my way down, but the top was still very icy. Spikes worked well for me all the way to the tower.

East River Trail is clear all the way up with the exception of a couple downed trees, but nothing that you can't walk around. No spikes needed until really the last few hundred meters of trail up to Indian Head. Beautiful trail and great view from the top.

A little bit of snow and ice, but no issues getting to the top. Great views.

Great hiking, just be ready for the environment...in the warmer months be ready for lots of bugs (mosquito's, ticks, etc), and know how to purify your own water. Over two days the trail was empty of any other people, and we had it all to ourselves. Reserve your campsites well in advance through the NPS website and get your keys for the canoe's on the lakes. We used the Arrowhead lodge to shuttle us to the trailhead, but there's lots of others that can do it too...and if you got your own boat you can moor off right at the trailhead.

Really fun trail, with a mix of meadows, forests, creeks, and rocky ridge lines. The grade up to the ridge line is not bad at all, and I saw numerous families with children along the trail. I usually associate Arizona with the more Sedona-type of geography, and this trail broke that stereotype for me completely. Great trail, and a great little region of Arizona.

Definitely get the free caving permits from the ranger station and check the caves out. Take a helmet and a light!

Great trail. I went up via Tejas trail to the peak, and came down via Bear Canyon Trail (Bear Canyon trail is a beast going down, I can't imagine how tough it'd be going up). Great views from the top too.
