Matt Morrison reviewed Lava Lake (Cascade Creek) Trail

A beautiful trail that seemed to be about 60% rocky and 40% compacted dirt. The grade wasn't awful, just a steady incline from bottom to top. We hiked the trail with kids ranging from 9 to 15.

The lake at the top is a great payoff and made the hike well worth it. I would guess the lake is about a half mile in length and 200 yards wide. There is a nice little beach on the east side of the lake about 1/3 of the way down that made for a great swimming spot for the kids. They said the water was brisk but not near as cold as the Gallatin River at the trailhead.

I hiked this trail with my two sons (14 & 11). We parked at the Compton trailhead and headed down into the Hollow. The trail was fairly rugged and had some real scenic vantage points on the way down. The area around the waterfall was very picturesque and there were some real neat boulder formations near the bottom. The waterfall and rock bluff were pretty spectacular, especially for this part of the country. The water had slowed to a trickle but provided a nice cool-down on the warm October Sunday.

We opted to continue our hike to the Buffalo River and then to the Sneeds Creek trail for the return. This nearly doubled the length of the route but made it a nice loop instead of an out & back. The Sneeds Creek Trail crossed the creek at least 3 to 4 times before turning Northeast back towards the trailhead. It also took you by "Granny" Henderson's cabin, a cool landmark.

The trip was not easy and it took us around 6 hours to cover the 8+ miles. I would suggest hiking poles, especially if you have bad knees. One last note, we did come across two timber rattlesnakes and one copperhead along the trail. One of the rattlesnakes was over 3' long but was dead in the middle of the trail. While these were neat to see, it did make me a little uneasy. I'm guessing they may have been active due to the warm fall temperatures.

We hiked a combination of the Purple and White trails on the West side of Hwy 65. The combined trails came in a little over 6 miles and surprised me with an elevation gained of nearly 900'. It took us about 2.5 hours to complete the combined route.

The scenery was nice but not spectacular. The purple trail started just east of the gun range parking lot and took you high on a ridge with multiple switchbacks. The view from the ridge was probably the high point of the hike. The White trail would have been better in the Spring or fall when the creek had some water in it. It was bone-dry but expected in July.

This was a good trail if you live in SGF and don't want to drive far.

We took the Pohono trail to Sentinel Dome from Taft Point. This route takes you along the south rim of the valley and offers amazing views along the way. The views from Sentinel Dome are awesome and worth checking out. Not near as crowded as Glacier Point.

This hike offers phenomenal views for relatively minor hiking. We took the trail from the parking lot and the hike was an easy downhill stroll. The views at the end of the trail are nothing short of spectacular. I've never seen a place that has such pure vertical drops of that height. The last step-up before reaching the little rail section reveals a panoramic view of the valley with a great view of El Cap. The only thing it does not offer is a view of Half Dome, but you can get that from Sentinel Dome or Glacier Point. If you have the nerve, take a look over the rail. It almost made me feel paralyzed; stunning.

This was one of our favorite places in Yosemite and we only came across 10 other hikers, much less congested than the Valley trails. On the way back, we opted to yield to the left and took the Pohono trail to Sentinel Dome for sunset. More and more awesome views. Highly recommended.

This is a great river to float that is off the beaten track. There are multiple springs that feed the river that provide nice river levels and a refreshing water temperature. The river is also great for families as there isn't a ton of traffic and it is not a party river.

Have lived just north of here my entire life and decided to take my wife & 2 boys (13 & 10) down for some morning hiking. It was a warm morning and the creek was up. We crossed it 4 times and it gave us a good chance to cool off. I think we did most of the yellow and part of the silver and it was a good hike. Took us around 2 hours and got the heart pumping pretty good on the hills of the yellow.
