More enjoyable, more strenuous approach to Cowles than the "main way."

This trail should be marked moderate, it is not an easy hike.

The first mile-ish is easy, the rest of the hike is moderate. Going the route provided by AllTrails, the way back is extremely steep- those not in good shape should avoid the gullies, so maybe do an out-and-back from the halfway point rather than the full loop.

Very easy hike, took less than an hour to summit. A surprising amount of shade on the way up, which is mostly switchbacks.

Great views from the top! For those who are easily bothered, there are lots of tiny flies at the top, but it didn't really bother my friends and I. It was crowded on a holiday weekend but not overbearing. Not a fan of repeating hikes, but I would do this one again.

Many trails, often flat and easy to navigate thanks to lots of signage. $3 cash fee to enter the park. Lots of trees and shrubs thanks to the riparian zone, but be mindful of poison oak as it's plentiful by the creek! Also there's a small waterfall worth checking out.

Really nice trail. Small parking lot, but there's an overflow lot nearby and plenty of street parking. The trail does lead to the lake via the reservoir, just keep following signs to Lake Hodges Overlook (when starting, the first trail is actually the Way Up Trail, which connects to the overlook trail), you'll be glad you did! Good elevation change and nice views, especially at the final overlook.

Nice trails, but the bridge to cross I-5 is closed for "3 to 5 years," according to the park rangers, so you can't get to any trails west of the 5 from any trailhead east of the 5 (attached a pic of a current map on photos).

Nice variety of terrain, changes from dirt trail to rocky to asphalt as you reach Lake Ramona. Big elevation change once on pavement. The trail itself is fine, I felt like I was walking on a road the entire time and that's not my jam. Parking is limited.

Went with a large group of people a few days after rain, so the park was very green! Clear, well-marked trail made it easy to navigate all the way to the road (Creek Hills Rd). Moderate hike with lots of smaller, less-traveled trails made it easy to explore the area. Some cool historical significance on this trail - the remnants of a flume (an aqueduct) are at the bottom of the valley, almost at the halfway point from the road. It was used to transport water to San Diego!

Surprisingly nice trail. Half of the trail is flat and open, half runs along a stream, so lots of shade for that part. Since the rain last week, some of the trail is partially flooded, so expect your feet to get wet. Little bit of rocky terrain by the stream. Would rate this as easy/moderate, especially with the minimal elevation change. Watch out for poison oak when near the stream!

Started early in the morning to avoid the heat, as there is zero tree cover (make sure to bring lots of water and proper sun protection). Very steep for the majority of the hike; lots of loose sand/gravel can cause slipping, trekking poles might be needed. Made it to the top in 30 minutes, RT just over an hour - a good morning workout. Marine layer was still hanging around, so there was not much to see at the top. Be advised - Out of all five major peaks in the park, this is the most strenuous for the shortest distance.

Matt D reviewed Pyles Peak Trail

As stated before, the hike to Cowles is typically crowded. Continuing on to Pyles, there were very few hikers/trail runners, which was a nice change of pace for a weekend hike. Very little shade like all the major peaks in the park, so bring sun protection and a good amount of water. Clear trail with signs made it simple to navigate to the top.

A challenging, but enjoyable, hike. As stated below, bring sun protection and enough water as there is no shade on this hike. Based on everyone's complaints of the ineffective trail signs, I downloaded the AllTrails app for my iPhone. Definitely utilized the trail map on the app to make sure my friend and I didn't get lost, as the signs are definitely not helpful. I recommend hitting the North peak first, and then the South peak if doing the entire loop, as it's easier to walk down the massive stairs than up.

Left early in the morning to avoid the heat (615am), and we returned to the parking lot at 9am, so we avoided most of the 92 degree heat. Definitely bring lots of water and sun protection. Not too steep, the gradual slope made it a "moderate" otherwise would consider it easy. Not much water coming down the falls, but the tranquility makes the hike worth it. Definitely recommend!

Side note, when you park your car on the hill make sure it faces downhill (is it a California thing? I don't know), the park ranger yelled at us and was issuing citations to all the 15-or-so cars parked the wrong way as we left.
