A very nice hike with several beautiful lakes and the Loch along the way. The last bit up ti Sky Pond gets a bit tricky for some. Do this hike early in the day to avoid the crowds, as it is very popular. On the way back down the trail from the Loch to the parking area was a zoo.

Mark Buccolo reviewed Petrified Forest Nature Trail

Surprising little hike. I've been to the Petrified Forest NP. This is more condensed but the petrified wood is every bit as interesting. The plus here is that it is not that visited and there is a bit of elevation change. The NP is flat. If you go, make sure you take the Sleeping Rainbow loop. There are more colorful pieces there and is well worth the extra hiking. The $8 admission was a bit of a surprise. They had a lone state employee taking $ and giving out maps. Still, the $ are for preservation and I am good with it.

Goblin Valley is an amazing place. Unfortunately people are allowed to roam anywhere in the park..You can imagine the havoc brought about by loads of unsupervised children. That said, the Goblins Lair is relief from the crowds. A nice trail around the other side of the valley that is sparsely traveled. I only ran into to a pair of women who were looking for the "lair." Not a difficult hike, mostly flat with a scramble up to the lair. As in most hikes that are more remote, it is better to have some company.. I didn't, but I am careful when climbing or descending scree slopes. Was lucky enough to get some interesting light from the top. Like some others on this site, this was combined with a visit to Little Wild Horse Canyon.

A nice hike to warm up for other "higher" peaks. The views are best well before the top. There is little of great interest on top. Weather was an issue the day I hiked. It started out as a beautiful day but clouds started coming in as I approached the top. Sat down for lunch at the summit and it started to hail. Headed back down with hail off an on and then the rain and thunder started. Reached treeline before it got too bad. Passed a number of nut cases hiking up in this weather. No accounting for good/bad sense. Overall, a good day. Aren't they all on the trail?

Grays/Torreys is a great way to knock off two 14ers at one time. This was part of my retirement trip that included AZ and UT. Terrific views but way too many people on a Saturday. Bad planning on my part. Next time I will do this mid-week. Even though it was August, it was really cold from 12K to the top. I'll add another layer next time. About half of the crowd turned around after summiting. The rest of us trudged over to Torreys (two 14ers for the price of one). If you are going to do this hike, I would suggest you get there very early if you want to park within miles of the trailhead. The road was very chopped up and high clearance vehicles are were required for the last two miles.

A great alternative to Long's Peak when the weather is not cooperative (wind and early snow). Left very early to catch the sunrise over the lake. The downside of any Long's Peak area excursion is the early start. Hiking with a headlamp does not allow me to see or photograph the beauty of the area on the way in.

Mark Buccolo reviewed Rim-to-Rim: North Kaibab to Grand Canyon Village

My second one day rim to rim was even better than the first. I left the north rim at 4:30 and arrived at the south rim 11-1/2 hours later with a big grin on my face. The North Kaibab Trail is my favorite part of this trip. You get real solitude (I usually solo hike) while sharing the trail with typically occasional couples. You can only appreciate the size and magnificence of the Grand Canyon when you hike to the river. This was a retirement gift to myself. The first time was in August when it topped out at 117 degrees. This time it was a comfortable 94 at the hottest. Swore that I would never do this again but upon reflection, perhaps a 70th birthday trip with a partner???
