Mark Werges reviewed Delicate Arch Trail

Spectacular hike culminating in one of the most recognizable rock formations in America. Some ledge walking near the end might be much for those afraid of heights.

Fantastic experience! The hike from the trailhead to the lake is a pleasant stroll through the forest that includes streams and waterfalls. The trail is well marked and impeccably maintained. From the lake to the summit, one encounters seemingly endless switchbacks. The terrain varies from rock to dirt to snow and the intensity ranges from moderate to challenging. Once the saddle at the top of the climb is achieved, one is treated to an entirely new landscape of spectacular mountains on the other side. Several peaks are connected by saddles, so one can venture on after reaching Wheeler's summit.

Peaceful, yet unremarkable stroll through the woods over one of the lower sections of Rich Mountain. The real highlight of the day was driving the Talimena Scenic Byway on the Oklahoma-Arkansas border. Spectacular views of the Ouachita Mountains! Be sure to enjoy that fresh mountain air.

Climbing the highest dune was the ultimate "stair stepper" experience. For every step forward, one slips backwards six inches. Extremely rigorous workout with spectacular views along the way.

Mark Werges reviewed Black Bear Trail to Ralston Roost

I chose the Black Bear Trail in Golden Gate Canyon State Park as an "acclimation hike" upon arriving in Colorado in preparation for a 14'er I would be climbing a few days later. The trail was rated as the most difficult by the park's visitor center. The hike maxed out at about 9200 feet and included awesome views of the snow-capped Front Range in the distance and the canyon below. The trail is rigorous, though not necessarily difficult, in my opinion. I was fascinated by the unusual evergreen scrub along the hike. Very enjoyable!

Grant's Trail is a popular paved trail good for running, walking, roller blading, and cycling in a suburban setting. It is not a nature hiking trail per se, though it connects to a few short ones near Blake Snyder Park. The trail is level and miles are marked, so it is useful for distance training. Cyclist should beware of children, dogs, and the clueless during busy times. One can get up close and personal with the world famous Budweiser Clydesdales by Grant's Farm.

Mark Werges reviewed Limestone Hill Trail

The Limestone Hill Trail in Mastadon State Park is a nice, short outing of some rigor close to St. Louis County and Jefferson County residents. The scenery is ordinary. The dirt, root, limestone trail is easier on the feet than the granite mountains to the south. Please note, the park is closed during holidays, but you can park in nearby subdivisions.

Climbing Quandary was a spectacular experience! Awesome views throughout the whole hike. I met people from all over the world and encountered mountain goats and marmots on the east ridge. The final 1000 feet are rocky and difficult. One must work with 40% less oxygen near the peak. Totally worth it!

The Desert View Trail gets you up - close-and-personal with exotic Sonoran flora and offers spectacular views of distant mountain landscapes. The trail is relatively short with just enough hills to keep it interesting. Beware the Jumping Cholla!

The rare honeycomb formation on the plateau makes this hike worthwhile. Otherwise, it is a short, unremarkable hike. Nice views.

Mark Werges reviewed Canal Loop Trail

The Canal Loop Trail in the Land Between the Lakes Recreation Area is well marked and scenic. One can visit two lakes and a canal in a single day's hike. Several connector trails allow hikers to lengthen and shorten as desired. The Kentucky Lake side features hilly terrain, which is easily traversed by anybody who is reasonably fit. It also offers the most impressive scenery. I saw deer, squirrels, geese, and woodpeckers along the trail, while encountered very few people during the chilly Friday afternoon I was there.

Mark Werges reviewed Pickle Springs Natural Area

This hike features natural springs, spectacular rock formations, scenic overlooks, and remarkable foliage. Love the variety of ferns! The "Trail Through Time" has a prehistoric feel as you explore canyons, caves, and creeks and climb through sandstone arch structures. One of the more interesting trails in Missouri.
