Mark Tompkins reviewed Icehouse Canyon to Cucamonga Peak Trail

This is a great hike. The trail is well-maintained and there is a cool mine to explore en route. Very nicely shaded for most of the trail, and breezy, this hike is pretty comfortable. It does feel pretty long at times though, because it isn't easy to see your progress up to the saddle. I also find that making it up to the Icehouse Saddle is doable, but I start to feel the altitude when pressing on to the summit.

On a clear day, though, you can see everything from the peak and it's absolutely beautiful.

The Devil's Backbone is way less scary than many make it out to be, there are only a couple of somewhat-exposed sections. Most of the hike I felt totally secure. The views here are great. If you're debating between something up the Icehouse Canyon or this, I'd choose this. The trail offers views the whole time.

I also recommend taking the lift down to save your knees--totally worth it.

I think we accidentally ended up on the "mountaineers route" that Carola mentions below--but it seemed like the only route up. The last .25-.5 miles is a steep but fun scramble. Nothing too dangerous, but not for those afraid of heights. Bring bugspray, the bugs were a nuisance.

My GPS put this at closer to 7miles and 3000ft.

One of the best wine country hikes, been coming here a long time. Absolutely stunning views from gunsight rock!

Closer to 11 miles. Beautiful views on a clear day and a great workout otherwise. There are some cool mines you can crawl into during the summer months and they go pretty far back!

This hike was amazing and a killer workout. We accidentally did it backwards and climbed up the steep side and back through the falls. I'd advise doing it the correct way, cause the drawn out descent along the waterfalls--while pretty--was pretty killer on the legs. Would rather have had the gradual ascent and fast descent. :)

Steep with lots of short switchbacks. You'll be impressed with how quickly you climb up, but they views are usually pretty smoggy at the top.

It's a great workout and there was hardly anyone else there.

EDIT: Went back recently and two cars had been broken into in the parking lot. Do NOT leave valuables in your car!

Great glute workout. If you don't have the time to do the full Los Liones trail, this is a great alternative.

This hike is one of the best around. Quintessential L.A. hike with great views and coastal breeze. So beautiful with all the recent rain. FYI, this is only 1300 feet up, not 2700, so don't let it scare you away!

Lots of graffiti, but fairly cool experience. Be on the lookout for poison oak, especially with all the recent rainfall.

Much shorter than I was expecting. The views from the wisdom tree are great on a clear day!
