Mark Swope Sr. reviewed Gabes Mountain Trail to Hen Wallow Falls

Nice falls. Not a lot of room if you go when the tourists flock to it. Gradual climb along the trail. Hardest part is the walk up the spur trail from the fall BUT not overwhelming. When there is not a lot of leaves on the trees you get good views of English Mtn & Mt Cammerer.

I completed southbound which is less climbing. There is a climb up to Snowbird Mtn regardless which direction, but for this section SB was best & has better views from Snowbird on. One could save themselves a lot of climbing and it is shorter to use the gravel roadway (Green Corner Rd) to/from the Pigeon River/I-40. There is also a false white trail blaze that leads to the Standing Bear Hostel. It takes u about 1/2 mile out of the way. Seems like a false attempt to get a hiker to go to that hostel.

Easy walk in woods with only very slight elevation gain. Less than 1/2 mile one way. From I-40 take the Harmon Den exit uphill & into the forest along Cold Springs Rd. (Forest Road 148). Make no turns until approximately 3 1/2 miles in you come to the intersection of Forest Road 3526. Turn right (there is a sign pointing right to a horse camp). Approximately 0.2 miles later you pass the horse camp on your left. A gate blocking the road is just ahead. Park in the area of the gate (without blocking others). Walk inside of that gate and there you will find the trail opening on your left. The trail runs along the creek that is at that gate. Hope this simplifies the directions. Best secluded waterfall I’ve been to. Suggest going after there has been heavy rains.

What east TN represents well: waterfalls, peaceful woods surrounded by giant rock cliffs making a holler. Marked well with blue blazes.

Some strenuous ups & downs but also nice sections along the top of the ridgeline with great views of distant mtns & French Broad River. Well maintained.

Great views of the French Broad River & surrounding mtns. Would do this in fall and winter so you can enjoy the views. This trail is advertised as a bicycle trail also. I personally would avoid riding a bike down this trail. Seems dangerous for that. This app says 2.3 miles out & back. HOWEVER, it is 2.5 miles just to an intersecting trail...Paint Rock Trail. Thus, an out & back hike to that point is 5.0 miles. Not sure what the 2.2 mile reference is.

You earn this one! Climb about 2.5 miles to get to fire tower. Views great of course.
