Wow, this was a blast of a trail to run on. Went last week with about an inch of fresh snow, but had a wonderful time. Very pretty and runnable throughout.

Attempted this hike again after failing to reach the lake 1 week ago. There is still tons of snow, and you'll be walking on snow from about 8500' and up. Unfortunately, this also aligns with the steepest ascent of the hike, so it is tough going. I'd highly recommend micro spikes and trekking poles. I managed to get up to the lake without either, but it was very hard.

The lake is still almost completely frozen, there are a couple blue spots showing through the ice, particularly around the edges. The cirque that the lake is in, is beautiful, but I have to say, I was hoping for a bit better payoff after the tough hike. I'm sure this trail and lake will be amazing in about 3-4 weeks once most of the snow is gone.

A beautiful and great hike in the middle of Big Cottonwood Canyon. The trail is pretty steep the whole way with a few areas of flat or low grade to give you some relief. Luckily, most the trail is shaded. It follows Butler Fork for about half the time before branching off and heading up switchbacks to Circle Awl Peak. On June 3rd 2017, there were a couple spots of snow from about 8,400 ft and up, but nothing difficult and easily passable with running shoes.

The view at the top is incredible as you can see all of Big Cottonwood, this would probably be really amazing in the Fall when the colors change. There would be an option to make this a loop that stays high going underneath Gobbler's Knob toward Reynold's Peak and past Dog Lake, but that is at least an additional 3 miles from what I can tell from the trail maps.

An incredible hike with gorgeous views of Little Cottonwood Canyon. The hike is a pretty steady climb most of the way with brief bits of reprieve. We were carrying children on our back, and it got quite difficult during the second half and actually didn't make it up to the lake. We turned around about 3/4 miles away from the lake because the snow and time of day.

From about the fork off of White Pine Lake Trail, this trail had thick snow most of the way (there were bits with no snow). The snow is dense and hard so it is possible to walk on top without too much trouble, but that also means it is quite slippery. This made the going tough and ultimately forced us to turn around before the lake. We'll be back again to tackle this once the snow melts off more.

All that to say, I'd highly recommend, it was a blast of a hike!

This is a decent trail on the west side of the valley where there isn't much going on. The day I was there it was quite busy with other hikers, mountain bikes, and horseback riders. There aren't really an spectacular views, though the scenery is nice enough I suppose. Overall the abundance of horses and bikes made this a less desirable trail to hike, but it might be a decent option if you want something in the area. There's just much better options in the Wasatch Mountains.

Well, it is a nice, shaded, paved trail with great views of the lowest section of Little Cottonwood Canyon, but that's about it. This is a very short trail and I would really only recommend it for the families with small children as it is a great trail to allow kids to run around. Otherwise, there's better trails further up the canyon.

Great and beautiful hike with an excellent payoff. Plenty of shade for the majority of the hike, there are some unshaded spots. The waterfall is gorgeous and if you feel like it will cool you down plenty. We went on the 4th of July around 9:30am and it was extremely crowded which slows you down a lot as the trail is mostly single track and you have to step to the side to let others pass. Definitely go early in the morning to avoid the crowds.

Be aware, that the main parking area for the trailhead is within the Forest Service area and therefore requires a fee of $6 to get a 3-day pass (cheapest option). I did see people parking just before the fee booth so I'm assuming they avoided the fee.

Ended up coming down this trail from hiking up to Desolation Lake. It is a beautiful, quiet side canyon. Would be very steep going up, and was somewhat difficult in places coming down (especially closer to the ridgeline). There were several downed trees and some creek crossings along the way.

This hike has it all. There's plentiful shade almost the entire way, for parts you are walking through beautiful forests, along a rushing creek, and of course the lake at the end. Desolation Lake is a gorgeous teal color and the cirque it is in feels so quiet and secluded. The trail itself is well maintained and easy to moderately sloped. It would be a really good hike to bring kids on, but it is a long hike! The trail was not busy at all only saw 4 other hikers the whole time. Highly recommended.

This is a nice easy trail that winds its way up from the Alta base to the Albion campgrounds. Right now it is really pretty with the green mountains and rushing creeks/streams. The wildflowers aren't in bloom which will make this an even nicer hike. This is a great way to access the other trails higher up the mountain as the Albion Basin Road is closed until July 11th.

This was a beautiful hike from the Alta base (Albion Basin Road is still closed as of 06/19/2016, the Town of Alta's website states it will be open July 11th), so we hiked through Albion Alps Meadow and pushed on to the lake. The trail to the lake is easy to moderate with a series of switchbacks at the end in almost full sun. It can be a bit tough and hot, so bring plenty of water. It is a great hike with Devil's Castle high above you which gives an amazing backdrop to the lake. I'm sure this hike is even better when the wildflowers are in blow later this summer.

Great hike, I love the options here, seems like endless country lies before. The views are amazing and you start at a high elevation, so there isn't really too much climbing involved. Beautiful!

Great little hike so close to the city. Moderate uphill most of the way with very little shade. It has a great view of the city almost the whole way and once past the BST you get a great view of the surrounding mountains on the other side of the ridge. There were some wildflowers in bloom which just added to the beauty of it all. Great hike!
