Marissa Weeks reviewed Heart Lake via Rogers Pass Trail

Gorgeous hike that rivals some of the best in Colorado and even RMNP with all of its relics, wildflowers and cascades! Would be a fun one even for young kids just to go in for a short bit to see the first cascade and flowers (from Moffat Tunnel East Portal). The hike is mainly forested which is fantastic for hot summer days. No beetle kill. Just delicious smelling forest and flowers and cascade after cascade. But the real reward was reaching Rogers Pass Lake! I camped there because I thought it was prettier than Heart and had more tree coverage for protection. However, the second night I was there it was as if a plane dropped off 100 backpackers and suddenly there were tents every 20 feet! Saw some horrible habits like not hanging food properly and cooking in camp. Felt more like a campground party than a wilderness experience at that point. Hundreds of dayhikers coming in on my hike out at 8am. Dogs all off leash (against the rules). Trailhead completely full. Go during the week if you can. If not, it's still worth it even with the masses of people.

Backpacked here June 16-18. Very busy trail for day hikers and a couple non-permitted backpackers showed up, too. Snow hiking above 9900 at that time and traction devices and poles were needed.Permitted site was pretty snow covered. Got a talking to from rangers for camping on dryer areas. But gorgeous setting! Nice hike up, lots of falls. Saw moose in the parking lot.

The trail isn't super amazing but the destination sure is! Backpacked here July 4th weekend and had it to ourselves. Still plenty of snow at final mile. Would have liked traction. Was glad to have GPS track from prior visit as Trail was a bit lost getting to lower and upper Lake. Best sites and view at lower Lake. Saw family of white goats in distance. Climbed over 28 downed trees on trail. Took us about 6 hours to hike in, 4 to hike out. Nice flowers!

Pretty, forested area, well maintained trails, no mud and only saw one batch of dog poop but you can hear the highway noise from 285 the whole time.
