Marek Bowers reviewed Towsley Canyon Loop Trail

The temperature was ideal for a mid-day hike (I would avoid hiking this in the afternoon on a really hot day) so my girlfriend and I did the clockwise route at about noon. The path is very well maintained with a lot of foot traffic. We saw a rattle snake that had just moved off the trail so beware. Lots of lizards, birds and gorgeous wildflowers. The bubbling tar pits are interesting. Views from the top are spectacular on a clear day! This hike has several hill climbs that will test your endurance. The hills are slow, steady, not very steep, but go on for awhile. Bring water and watch your step for crawly things.

Went last night around 5:30 and did the loop. The first 1.5 miles is like being on a stair master for an hour. My legs were burning the entire time. Once you get up to the radio towers, it evens out a bit and the scenery is great. The downhill is a nice reprieve but then your legs start burning again from constant downhill. The views at sunset are spectacular so it was well worth the hard work. Not a lot of other hikers on the trail, but numerous lizards and wildlife after the sun goes down (saw an excited skunk and a coyote). If you park near the playground, there are bathrooms. Bring lots of water and avoid in the middle of the day because it's hot and hardly any shade. We did the counterclockwise route so we hiked UP the steepest part. Hiking clockwise and DOWN the steepest part looks like it could be quite treacherous without the right shoes and potentially hiking poles.

We had the trail to ourselves on New Year's Eve 2016 (then again, it was a bit drizzly). Winter mornings are a great time to do the hike because it can get incredibly (and dangerously) hot. The waterfall was beautiful and a serene place to have lunch. Trail was well maintained. Get a permit and strike up a conversion with the folks who check the permit at the trailhead because they can provide some very useful info. After the hike, drive to Ramona and go wine tasting.
