Mara Sievers reviewed Crawford Ridgepole Trail to Doublehead Mountain

Totally forgettable. Access road (Sandwich Notch Rd) is 30 min of dirt road with the deepest potholes to maneuver around. Not fun. Hike not that great either. One ledge with nice view of the lake. Only benefit: not crowded. Will not repeat.

Mara Sievers reviewed Indian Head Trail

Middle half of the trail is a mess. Desperately needs maintenance. Not enjoyable. Coming down I realized there is a trail next to the trail for most of the middle section with makes it a bit easier, but I couldn’t find it on the way up. Lost the trail several times due to fallen trees etc. even though there are plenty of blazes. View is wonderful. Haven’t done the blue trail that approaches further north. Maybe that trail is better.

April 23, 2018: No trail blazes at all. Had to use All Trails app constantly to stay on the trail. Very mixed conditions, some snow coverage, then sand and rock. Unfortunately I had to turn around about halfway up the trail, when I came to a creek that had to be crossed. A snow bank on my side of the creek was so tall (at least 6 feet) that I could get down and to the other side. All footprints in the snow stopped there, none continued at the other side of the creek. I looked for other spots along the creek to cross, but the area is too grown in. I talked to other hikers on the way down, who confirmed that that's as far as one can go at the moment. Wish I had known. It was still a beautiful day and nice elevation gain and great view of the ski resort and tram the whole time.

Wonderful winter hike. Parking area has room for at least 10 cars and additional parking is possible along Old Hebron Road. Took me 2 hrs to get up (in the snow) and one hour down. Consistent moderate grade to the summit.

Mara Sievers reviewed Straightback and Mount Major Loop

What a great and fun loop. Parking at the trailhead is alongside the road which is a bit tight. The trail going up to Straightback Mountain was not very well blazed (at least in the snow). Had there not been tracks ahead of us we would have had trouble finding our way. The connection from the summit of straightback to major (blue blazed Belknap range trail) was well blazed again. We hiked clockwise which was a great idea as to descend the shorter and moderately steep and very well blazed red trail. We had to break the trail through the snow on the way down to complete the loop and not go back the way we came. There was one brook crossing which was maybe a bit tricky but we found a way across without getting wet. Took us a bit under 4 hours in the snow.

2 hours to White Cliff Overlook. 1 hr 15 down. Trail was icy in spots and lots of leaves. Must be careful on descent. Fantastic view from Overlook onto Lake Solitude. Strange energy in the woods, though.

Wasn’t prepared for snow on the ground, but it made it even better. Constant climb. Great workout.
1 hr 45 to summit, 1 hr 15 to come down.
If you start at Waterville Valley Ski Resort, try to park at Lot 1, that’s where trail head is located.
Tripoli Rd is closed during the winter months (starting in November) after the Ski Resort (going west). If you’re coming from I-93 exit 28 and then 49, getting here is not a problem. The other trailhead starting further west on Tripoli road is accessible via exit 31 with exception of winter (November til April) as Tripoli Rd is closed. Again: trailhead on Tripoli Rd NIT accessible in the winter.
