Good hike especially as an add on to soapstone trail. Nice elevation on this one. This is a little short though, and has a marking problem.

Marking problem : the extreme west end of the lollipop is mismarked. The yellow trail loops back left (turning south toward the power lines) but the fork isn’t that noticeable and then there is a stray yellow blaze if you continue right on what is supposed to be blue. You then lose markings but wind up at a creek crossing with no blazes , although clearly still on a trail.

Hiked in dusting of snow with medium pack and micro spikes (not really needed but the description of this route was severe). Several frozen creek crossings. Very nice hike but this is NOT AT ALL DIFFICULT. This trail is easy to moderate at worst. Not sure where the description above came from. There have been changes to this trail over the years - perhaps this description was of an older version that was much more difficult.

The purple blazes were well marked. Because the route was much easier than expected, I also took the advice of another post and added Bull Run trail which branches off left as a yellow blaze about half way down the Sandstone outbound leg. That leg was great but beware marking issues at extreme northwest end.

Very good route. Had modest snow and ice. Have read that this is EASY, and read that this is MODERATE. Based on current conditions, I would rate difficult. I base this on climbing Camelback mountain in Phoenix a week or so ago and that was rated double diamond "extremely difficult". You cannot snowshoe this. I was glad I didn't grab any and instead opted for my spikes. Saw many people wishing they had brought spikes.

I'm not a runner, was carrying medium pack (training for bigger climbs) and using sticks. Start was very cold and Packed snow. About half way it shifts to lots of ice and slush. Then on the westbound leg plenty of mud mixes in with ice. The final half miles gets a little steeper and there are a few 3-4' little scrambles that are a little precarious coming back down. The summit is great. Wonderful views and a couple places (rocks) to sit and cook a lunch. The estimate of 2.5hrs was spot on for me. Round trip from road (gate closed) was right at 5 miles with 2500' gained. Lots of people on the route today, but not overly crowded. Current weather is a little odd where higher elevations are warmer than the lower ones.

Amazing views. Snowshoed it feb27,2016. Many people hiked with spikes but there are many places to sink in the deep snow. Mostly packed well. Weather changes quickly at top. Glad I had a pack with coat
