I did this hike in the opposite direction shown here and started from Waterton Canyon Road. It is about 6 miles of dirt road before connecting with the Colorado Trail. Wonderful for running- very slight uphill if you're going from east to west and lots of room on the dirt road to avoid others. Follows the river the entire way and feels safe. There are bathrooms almost every mile. Once it hits the Colorado Trail it gets steeper and was difficult to run. Very exposed- bring water! Saw TONS of big horn sheep!

Beautiful hike!! Difficult to run the first couple of miles out due to loose/bigger rocks and gravel. The last mile out is also fairly steep for running, however, the middle section is good for running. I arrived at around 7:30 am and there was still parking near the trailhead, but I would imagine it gets very busy on the weekends. The first 4 miles are in the trees, but the last 2 open up and allow for great views of the mountains and the valley below. Not too busy and incredibly gorgeous!

Really beautiful! Great views of the front range west and the foothills south of the trail. Still some snow up on the front range but no snow or wet spots on the trail. As I was leaving at around 10 am the parking lot had filled up and cars were already parked along the road. I'm sure it gets very busy in the late morning/afternoons. Lot only about half full at around 8 am.
