Super hot and muggy after work run. Barely made it back to the car at 8:55pm before the gate closes at 9pm. Days are shorter now and it's getting dark by 8pm. It was hard running in the dark even with my headlamp and phone's flashlight. The blazes/markers on the trees are tiny and are spaced too far apart while you're focusing not to tumble on the roots. One water crossing is a bit up with the rain, but still manageable with careful rock-hopping on the left side. Still a fun run!!!

Great hike with stunning views of Sawtooth Lake and Mt Regan. Checked out Alpine Lake as well on the way down. Lots of people backpack and camp either near Sawtooth Lake or Alpine Lake.

This is a beautiful trail, a little overgrown, but takes you on a little journey of discovery. The serenity of the forest overcomes you. The traffic noise and airplane sounds seems like distant hums. The trail splits one too many times so you have to watch for the white blazes on the trees. I have run the Umstead Loblolly Trail but could not find the connector to Schenck Forest once I get to Reedy Creek. I finally found it by starting the run from Schenck Forest. It's about 2.5 miles to get to the sign (State Trail Ends Here) in the Umstead SP Loblolly Trail. Returning back, I lost the trail somewhere where the silt covered it and ended up on the middle instead of the perimeter Richland Creek Trail. All the more reason to come back and experience the forest once again.

Getting to the Trailhead: The TH is not in the main Raven Rock State Park. It is another 30mins drive from there. River Road starts as paved road but the last .6 miles to the TH, it becomes gravel.
East Loop: I did both loops and started with the West Loop. I find the East loop less rocky and more runnable. Water crossing is not an issue as it is super low. There are muddy sections and horse poop that you just need to go around. It was a very hot and muggy day. I put on bug spray but was not really bothered by them at all. 'Love the tranquility of running this trail alone.

West Loop: I did both loops and started with the West Loop. It's a bit more rocky, hence, less runnable than the East loop. There are muddy sections which you can just skirt around. Water crossing is neglible as the level is very low. When you exit to River Road, turn right, walk for a minute, and on your right is a marker to re-enter the West Loop trail. This parallels the road and is about half a mile to the parking lot. I did not see any horses but lots of horse poop on the trail. Really enjoyed the peace and quiet as I was the only one on the trail.
