Short hike. Gorgeous views. Bring water, I visited the first week of February 2018. There was a storm coming in the distance, however it was warm. The trail is a loop. From the parking I would start at the western trail as it is the shorter route to the arch. Minimal ascents and descends. The surrounding area of Alabama hills was breathtaking. Hiking options, biking options and I believe off-road options. Oh also great boulders for climbing. Definitely coming back!

I did this hike with a group of friends late spring of 2016. The drive to get there is windy so road sick travelers beware. Many trails to choose from, permits at the front office. The entrance is very shady and the number of visitors/hikers were up there.

Now the beginning of the trail itself is fairly level with little inclines/declines. Trail markers make this hike easy to navigate. The loop I tracked was 10 miles overall. Midway through the hike, you start to climb. But it's gradual and this is where the trees open up and if it's sunny, just bring a hat. You hike along a peaceful creek, as you head back down the mountain. The crowd grows as you get closer to the falls and is where people like to people watch. The platform is small so photo opportunities may be limited or you just will have to wait. Hiking over the falls takes you upon smaller waterfalls. Here the trails are a mix of flat dirt, to stairs. As you pass these smaller chains of falls, the trail takes you higher again and where the hat comes in handy as the trees clear up slightly.

The trail then brings you back down and around, mostly downhill at this point.

3.5 (Hiked to the Pardee overlook)

To hike the trail a daily parking permit is required. Very inexpensive ($3 for the day, $20 for the year?)

The trail itself is wide, mix of gravel and dirt. The trees are spread apart. Not too shady so if hiking during a sunny day or the summer, bring a large hat, sunscreen, water!!

The hike was mildly moderate/easy from my experience and duration. Rolling hills. Small streams caused by the rain we've recently received. At the top of Pardee Overlook, great views westward toward Camanche and the valley.

On a rainy day, the hike was beautiful. As an "out-of-towner", the trailhead was pretty easy to find thanks to this App and GoogleMaps, however the parking lot/spot is enough for 3-4 cars. I'm assuming during peak season, trekkers would park along the street. On to the hike. Downhill until you get down to the American River. Then a moderate/moderately easy uphill. Not sure how this trail is rated "Hard" but I guess it can be? The views were amazing. Mossy trees, salamanders after salamanders, clouds and fog drifting in. The sound of rain hitting the ground, creeks were lively. I would definitely come back on a drier day. Recommended for those who want a moderate hike.
