Steven Hoeschele reviewed Kuliouou Ridge Trail

A solid hike with tree cover most of the way. The summit view isn't as expansive as some other hikes in the Ko'olau Mountains, but it's still very nice.

Decent hike, but it seems to be cloudy often. My friend and I didn't see any waterfall like the description suggests.

This is essentially the same hike as a couple other routes listed on Alltrails that cut through the crater. There are a number of short, unnamed trails worth exploring once you get down into the crater. The whole crater is great to explore as a long day hike or starting from the Holea campsite.

Beautiful, not very strenuous. There's a great climbing tree early on the route!

This is mislabeled as Easy; some people struggle to get back up to the summit. It's almost 3,000 ft gain in 3 miles.

If you can't handle hiking with ropes, don't attempt this trail; there are lots of ropes. You can also cut west along the ridge at the top (instead of coming down the west side of the crater), ascend Mt Olympus, and come down the Wa'ahila trail.... This requires catching a car or parking a second vehicle at Waʻahila Ridge State Recreation Area.

Gentle ascent, mostly under tree cover to start. The last part is exposed and ascends fairly steeply. Pretty views of both sides of the island from the top.

Steven Hoeschele reviewed Haiku Stairs (Stairway To Heaven) from Kuneki St. [CLOSED]

Some of the stairs are in rough shape but still safe. The crowds all get there super early, so it makes for uncomfortably squeezing past people on their way up/down. But there are very few people in either direction after about 8-8:30am. You can google other sites that will tell you exactly how to avoid the security guard.

Steven Hoeschele reviewed Na Pali Coast (Kalalau) Trail

Truly one of the best. But don't attempt the eroded dirt parts near crawlers ledge in rain & wind. It gets pretty sketchy. Just stay where you are if it's really raining. And watch out for the permanent "homesteaders."

    Steven Hoeschele reviewed Pihea Vista

It's hard to beat these views looking down into the Kalalau Valley, but I would call this an easy trail, not moderate.

Steven Hoeschele reviewed Canyon Trail Black Pipe Trail Loop

There are more trails in this area than Alltrails is showing us. I did a larger loop that included the Kumuwela Trail, which I started by Camp Slogget. Take a snapshot of the trail map at the park lodge (or buy one) for better details. Be sure to hit up the vistas just southeast of the waterfall!

Steven Hoeschele reviewed Pihea Trail to Alakai Swamp

You can also take the Alaka'i south and end up at a decent, underutilized campsite... makes a good stopover if you want to continue on and backpack the canyon.

Steven Hoeschele reviewed Aiea Loop Trail

A nice trail with some pleasant views, but nothing spectacular. It's on the easy side of "moderate," with gentle ups and downs. Some good spots for picnicking nearby.

    Steven Hoeschele reviewed Kukui Trail

Stellar. Mostly exposed to the sun and incredible canyon views for the first half on the way down, then covered under trees until the end. Don't stop at the treeline though, because the wildlife is in the woods; I saw a herd of 14 wild goats cross the trail down there. The mosquitoes at the river were vicious though--I got a dozen bites within 2 minutes and turned right around as fast as possible!

    Steven Hoeschele reviewed Nu'alolo Trail

Mostly covered until the end. You could do a 10-mile loop of this trail and the Awa'awapuhi Trail (plus walking back along the road) by taking the Nu'alolo Cliff trail. It's closed because it's seriously eroded and dangerous though. The park staff should fix it because it makes for a great loop, taking on both trails in one swoop.
