Went counterclockwise. Pretty at outset, with trail right right right up against the river. Rocky, rooty, and many many many trees down throughout the hike - evidence of storm, evidence of prescribed burn - easy to get past or around, though. Mostly shady. Averaged encounters with other hikers about every 30 minutes - nicely uncrowded for the Labor Day weekend. Welcome breeze and semi-blocked vista for picnic at top, about halfway in.

As we wrapped this morning hike up (~1.7 each way by our calcs), a car pulled up and the group paused to consider whether to hike this trail...We overheard, "Yeah, but once you go down, you gotta come back up!" before they pulled off in search of another option. That about sums it up, but the payoff is only at the bottom/river...My husband said, "I didn't even know this kind of terrain existed in NC!" Swimming hole (for our northern dog), rocks, cave, cascades, campsites...Beautiful! Easy hike down with a few watery/muddy hops & spots and plenty of rocks, so trail/hiking shoes recommended. Pole(s) help for the climb back up...People left a stack of walking sticks by the sign, hint hint. PS...This was *lightly travelled* the day we were there, but we imagine this was only because most folks were hiking trails in search of panoramic fall foliage views.

Emphasis on carriage trail, and if a two-lane, easy walk in the woods with gentle ascent is what you are looking for...this is for you. Heavy horse traffic near the lake. More time may be spent looking down to avoid horse dung than up at the foliage or view. Busy enough to discourage birding.

We love routinely doing a loop that includes Loblolly and Reedy Creek Lake Trail...busy morning this morning because of nice cool weather temps, but the creek was quite low which is a bummer for the dogs. If you want an uphill climb at end, start on Loblolly and take crushed gravel Reedy Creek Lake Trail back. If not, reverse. The loop is about 4.5 miles and on pretty easy surfaces.

Recommend starting loop downhill (left after gate), and ending coming uphill on the Rose River Horse Trail. There are some easy paths but many rocky climbs...definitely helpful to have at least one hiking pole or walking stick and trail shoes, not just sneaks. Plenty of water holes for water happy dogs but they have to be able to scramble, and be sure-footed. An easy version is to just walk the horse trail down to Dark Hollow Falls and back.
