Lisa Jabusch reviewed Mundys Gap Overlook

Avoid the first half mile of large loose rocks by taking Agave Trail to the right, right at the trailhead sign (it's not marked). It only adds a little distance but is oh so much better on footing. Then continue straight at the junction - this is marked, and follow Mundy's Gap trail. We ended up doing this by default, as we started out to hike Cottonwood Trail, but I'd had it with the large loose rocks by the junction. Did the ascent in just under 1 hour (we're late 50's), and the views at the Gap were so cool!

We do this with day packs as training for long hiking trips. Not necessarily a pretty hike - just keep on slogging!

We were here in Oct., and the weather was perfect - partly sunny, light breezes and 75-80 temp at midday. We were a little short on time, so only hiked out about 1 mile and then returned. I wanted to get past all the mounds with footprints, for good pictures, and found that in spades! We returned over some dunes that weren't directly on the trail, but in the general direction of the trailhead, and that was neat to be the only ones you could see for quite aways. In the distance we hiked, it was easy to navigate. Very easy to hike barefoot, and this is preferred, especially in the looser sand of the dunes.

We hiked this on 10/10/18 and the leaves were beautiful - probably peak for the red maples. Pretty trail but signage is not very good. We ended up on Cerro Blanco but turned back once it joined up with Crest Trail. It was pretty much all uphill to that point.

LOVED this trail! We liked both the complexity of the trail itself, as well as the fantastic views along it - both of the canyon, as well as the intriguing sculpturing of the walls you were walking by. If you have even the slightest fear of heights, you should NOT go on this trail. There were a number of times you walk on a (?)one foot wide path with a sheer, long drop into the canyon right next to you. Also, people of size might have quite some difficulty getting through some of the narrow squeezes. The scamper/climb up very tall stone steps after the petroglyphs can be very challenging, but it's only a short stretch.

Sure feels easy on the way down, but you definitely get the workout on the way back up. I completely agree with the Moderate rating - loose rocks at times, stepping over and around bigger rocks, fairly steep incline. Beautiful views down on the river as well as along the way. Check out the camp along the river, as well as the spring. We went in Oct., so the sun felt nice and not hot, to go with the cooling breezes. Nice pit toilet at the top, along with plenty of shaded picnic tables.

We went right at the fork at the beginning, and because it had rained that day, the steep descent was a little nerve wracking. Wish we had gone left to start. Not a trail if someone has any fear of heights, as the trail is narrow and right on the edge of the canyon/hill many places. We loved it! Fantastic canyon views, as well as an aspen grove right up against the rock wall.

Easy with nice little ups and downs to keep you somewhat interested. Hardly any views of the canyon that we wanted or expected (from the name).

Beautiful scenery and the slot canyon (my first) was really cool to maneuver through. Yes, the climb near the end is tough, but the railroad tie steps really help. Wear a hat and take lots of water.

We saw no wildlife, other than a grouse, but it was nice with lots of ups and downs, after the initial relatively steep climb. Mostly shaded forest, other than the last mile out on the open hillside, with the view of Gardiner, WY. The reflection of the trees and hills in the largest pond was beautiful.

Very confusing if you opt for the right hand fork labeled "observation " (?) or lookout. We didn't find the main trail after that until wandering around in mucky marsh around Swan Lake, and found a marker by accident. Otherwise, very flat and easy, as well as boring, trail.

Very little scenery or even trees. Tough climb. Just did it for the exercise. Views just OK at the top. Overall, boring.

We'd rate this as EASY to moderate, but we didn't make it all the way to the falls (limited time had us turn around at the last bridge over the creek). Good shade even in early afternoon - At least 50% of the distance. Really nice to hear the stream running along the whole way.
