Lisa Abe reviewed Abineau Trail to Bear Jaw Trail [CLOSED]

This hike is open now! I started at a quarter to 6 this morning and didn’t see a soul. I went up Abineau and down Bear Jaw. Since the trail just reopened they haven’t had time to clear up a few fallen trees. They are passable but take caution as you do. I’m glad I went the route I did but the views would’ve been better had I done it the reverse. I saw a ton of deer and even a 6 Point buck (I think that’s how you say it). Very neat! The drive in is fine on the dirt road (I have a low clearance vehicle) but gets dicey when you see the turn off to go onto 9123J. My gps wanted me to continue on 418 but there is a sign that clearly directs you to turn onto 9123J. There are some spots to park immediately on 9123J if you don’t feel like driving on the slightly hairier (big rocks and some puddles but nothing my car couldn’t clear) road but it’ll add about 1.5 miles (round trip). I loved the views here and was glad I went early as the monsoon clouds started rolling in as I was finishing around 9.

I absolutely loved this cave! Such a peaceful place. Google Maps had this updated so that the directions leave you right at the start of 9530. That was as far as I felt comfortable driving my low clearance vehicle. Parking there added on roughly 20 minutes and 3/4 mile in each direction but was totally worth it. I went yesterday in the heat of summer and there were only two others for the 2.5 hours I spent there. The cave was cooler with the breeze blowing in and obviously sitting in the shade. I could’ve spent an entire day just admiring its beauty. I can’t wait to bring out of towners there. A caution though: the road to get there is 10 miles on dirt road. Well maintained by bumpy in some areas. Also, stay low and left when you see forks in the trail. There are tons of them. If you do, you’ll be able to come around the left of the huge slab of rock on a very easy route.

There aren’t many trails that I would jump on doing twice. This trail is one I would. It was beautiful from walking through the pines, hiking through different views of the nearby mountains, and roaming along the beautiful wild flowers. I really enjoyed this hike and was surprised that it wasn’t harder with the elevation that is gained. This one I mapped at 9.5 miles, taking me 4 hours and 20 minutes. I took 150 pictures in that time. I felt the top was nice but the saddle near the cabin was better. It is a bit windy at the top so make sure to have a proper jacket if the weather is cooler. The dirt road (7 miles) to drive to the trail head was well maintained and I had no issue with my low clearance vehicle. You certainly do not need a 4x4 to get to this one.

I took Christmas tree to Heart to Sunset. I will say views wise, I wish I did it in reverse but sunset to go up (or down) is a bit treacherous. Christmas tree is relatively flat and shaded in the am. Heart trail feels like desert walking and is much less shaded. There were sporadic flowers blooming though and they were beautiful. Heart Trail is 2 miles of uphill climb and switchbacks and the views are great! When you first arrive at Sunset Trail on the ridge line, you’re walking through aspens (that were budding when I was there). It was super windy on the ridge line but the views behind me were fantastic. Once you start the descent (the same trail used to go up to Mount Elden Lookout) the trail becomes slippery with loose rocks. The total mileage according to my Fitbit was 9.5 miles and it took me roughly 4 hours to hike.

Really enjoyed this walk. Took about 1.5 hours and was roughly 4.5 miles. The view at the end is very beautiful. You won't see many others on this trail and although I saw tons of bike tire tracks, I did not encounter any bikers. Enjoyed the view of San Francisco Peaks at the end of the trail. Would not rate this as moderate (more easy).
