Unfortunately the trails were closed due to rain, however we did get the chance to walk along the road and out to some view points along the way. The reserve is beautiful with great views of the ocean and unique flora and fauna.

Pros: 360 views, ocean views, easy hike, accessible to beaches, wildlife

Cons: road noise, lots of people

This was an excellent hike! My ideal length and elevation.

Pros: beautiful terrain, 360 views, lots of dogs

Cons: heavily trafficked on weekends... there were lots of people hiking with loud music which detracted from the "out in the woods" experience

I'm normally a moderate hiker (my ideal hike is about 6 miles with up to 1500 of elevation) so this was a stretch for me. Note that the directions took us to the end of the trail, not the beginning, so that made it more difficult and confusing.

Pros: great views, remote location makes for a great wilderness experience

Cons: trail is very rugged, did not seem to be super well maintained. It's a very steep incline either way.

While the hike is clearly marked and the view at the top is rewarding, I would not recommend this hike to tourists or those seeking a true hiking experience. The path seems to be more of a resource for locals doing family activities or their daily exercise. Starting from the bottom, the trail is a steep and almost constant uphill until you reach the top of Double Peak. Most of the path is highly manicured and maintained, however the last bit of path is intensely steep, rocky and unkempt (unless you wish to walk on the road). The experience is the same on the way back down. Overall, my recommendation would be to just drive to the top if you want to see the view, and save the hike for a more enjoyable experience.

Trail is primarily for guests at the Ritz Carlton (across the street). To use the trail you must park at the hotel via the valet service (which at least is free). I'm a moderate hiker and found this trail to be pretty easy overall. It's short (only 2 miles) has a mild up and down incline, and is well marked except for the end. Views are good - mountains, birds and some developments. The only annoying part is that a brief stint of maybe 0.4 miles walking on the road is required to complete the loop. The rest is a dirt and rock trail through scrubby hills. It was a good option for an easy yet visually stimulating stroll.
