Straight shot, no switchbacks. Great views of Helens, Rainier, Adams and Hood on a clear day. Bring your split board or skis!

Not enough snow for micro spikes, but definitely enough to wear boots. The views at the top are much more clear now after the fire

Awesome trail that starts from the Meadows Nordic Center. The elevation gain is all at the end during the switchbacks. The views from the meadows are pretty spectacular and the shelter is in good shape. We had to break trail most of the way, but with GPS it isn’t hard to follow the trail.

Great hike, but definitely need spikes to get to the shelter. It may be better now, but when we went all the snow was iced over and there was no traction whatsoever. Longer than 10 miles, but worth every step. We took the trail that added an extra 0.6 mile to get that glorious view of Mt Hood, and an extra mile going to Cairn Basin. The trek down to Cairn Basin after the shelter is worth it.

OFFICIALLY OPEN AS OF 11-24-2018! It’s fascinating to look at all the burned trees against the fresh green forest floor. There are many, many rocks on the trail though so be careful. The trail was very muddy today. The falls are still as beautiful as ever. Be careful and look out for landslides/rock slides and flash floods as it is a burn area.

It was icy on some parts of the trail, but nothing that required micro spikes. They will probably be needed within the next couple weeks. You will need spikes if you want to go behind the falls though.
