Les Mounteer reviewed Grandaddy Lake Trail

Was a very pretty hike. My 10 yr old daughter and I made it up to the lakes areas and she was in awe most of the way. There were several areas where the rocks were a little much. My daughter nearly rolled her ankles on the loose stones several times going up and on the way back. There were a lot of dogs, but we didn't see a single one that was a problem, most of the owners were really good to keep them near and clean up after them. All in all it was great daddy daughter date.

Was a really good hike for younger kids. Took a 3 and 5 yr old with minimal problems. Was surprised how many people would listen to speakers blaring as they traveled the trail though. There were also a lot of areas with dog poop left about (open bags and not bagged at all.) Watched as someone let their dog crap in the river as well. Seems there are a lot of people that could use a refresher on Outdoor Ethics.

This hike has several steeper areas, but for the most part it wasn't bad. We took along several smaller kids with us

This isn't a hike for the lighthearted. It's steep just getting to the Wilderness marker. The switchbacks make the hike much easier once you get into the first mile or so. So, if you can make it up that far you should do well enough on most of the remainder. It's actually worse coming down than going up. There are several areas where the trail has some loose gravel, I saw several people end up sliding more than hiking.

I'd reiterate what others have said about starting early, brining lots of water, and plan on nowhere to park.

Really nice hike, the weather wasn't too warm. Was easily able to have a 3 yr old make it almost the entire way on his own. We did need to help kids cross the water ways, but for the most part was really easy.
Ran into about 3-4 other groups, but wasn't too busy. Some had difficulty knowing where to turn. I'd advise either using a pace count. Depending on how the runoff flows it may or may not be the third tributary you cross.
