Lauren Albrecht reviewed Pipestem McKeever to Heritage Point and Canyon Rim

so it was March 24th, but lo and behold we had snow and lots of it! That had its own treat. I love hitting trails in all seasons. For example you could hear the river below but you couldn't even see it. I found the trail a little confusing, ended up looping twice, it was good exercise. Wear good shoes, there's a lot of tree roots and rock, but if you're into it it's great!

This trail is underrated. It was an awesome hike! Nor would I say that it was easy, but it was really worth it.
Mile marker 90 on the south end of Skyline Drive, Shenandoah National Park, Rip-rap parking lot. You find the board that describes the trail and go north/right on the Appalachian Trail, just about a half a mile. Then take a left at the cement post for Riprap trail. A little rugged, always bring water and good hiking boots makes it better. But the trail just gets better and better as you go. After about two miles, having passed Calvary and Chimney Rocks, you come to it what looks like a Canyon, huge rock formations!
If you like trees, the smell of the forest, rock formation, awesome views - this is a well worth hike. I took my time with brakes and a snack; it took me 3 hours round trip back to the parking lot. And I ain't no youngster.

A nice short level Trail even on a misting rainy day. Especially if you love trees. Don't be sad by the old fallen hemlocks. You'll see there's new growth growing up in and around them! You can connect to the White Oak Canyon Trail to make it longer.

if you were to take your family or friend to one hike in Virginia I would recommend this one. It's easy and very worthwhile; Half an hour up to the falls. You could meader through the woods the other direction on the way back. Takes an hour, with a quaint overlook, and wind up at the old iron furnace. But just up and back along the falls is very rewarding and easy.

In Douthat Park, I took Ross Trail past the Lake, heading north on the right. That led me to Mountain Top Trail. When it seemed I reach the top because there were rocks and craggy trees and I could see 360° around, I went off the path of it to get a closer look at the rock formations and amazing trees and lost track of the trail a bit... Following the yellow blaze for Mountain Top Trail to head back, and realizing I was actually gaining elevation... I took out my Alltrails app and was very glad that I had connection! I truly don't know how that works when I could not send texts but I am thankful it did. A God send. Because it showed that I was going in the wrong direction and would have spent the night in the woods! So having a fully charged phone is another thing to add to my list of things to bring on a hiking expedition. (I was down to 20%)
Thank you AllTraills. I love your topographical map that works with GPS!

There's a Beard's Gap that goes east from the office that is moderate too easy. It has amazing views of old rock formations and streams. Well worth it!!

Actually, it's Roaring Run Falls. I'd say it's a bit more challenging if you're going to bring somebody who's 80 years old. But it is a very nice hike with a lot to see either way you take it.
