Great hike! Make sure you have map downloaded to help find the trail once you hit snow. There is still a lot of mud and snow. You can follow the tracks in the snow but with as fast as it's melting I would not rely on it. Trail is rocky so if you're thinking of bringing your furry friends I'd advise dog shoes; saw a couple whimpering dogs that just wanted to lay down :(. It was cool listening to large chunks of ice break off from the larger masses floating on Lake Aloha. Be prepared to share the trail as it's a busy one but worth it.

Starts out simple then it gets gravely and rocky in sections and steep, poles a good idea. You will definitely get a workout on this one! Currently few patches of snow near the top concealing the trail but otherwise clear. Awesome 360 degree view at the top. Lots of snow to the north still covering the various alpine lakes. Don't forget to look for the green military box to sign in.

Great trail for a exercise. Went up Training Hill and proceeded around the loop then cut up on Pig Farm for another good uphill to where it intersects Training Hill then back down. Total leg workout. Would not be fun in the heat but today was perfect weather, mostly overcast and cool.

Mostly flat, lots of bikes, which is expected of course, and lots of other walkers/joggers. I found it quite annoying that people with tank sized strollers blocked entire sides of the bike lane while walking on incorrect side of the bike trail but that's always the case anywhere along the American River Trail system. The plus side is a lot of opportunity to get off main trail to explore, plus the lake of course to jump in when it's hot.

This is a great trail and the lakes are beautiful! Can be a bit crowded this time of year but still worth it. If you bring your dog know that there will be lots of other pups running around, but I've never had a problem with aggressive dogs here. Pay attention when going across the open granite as it is easy to lose sit if the trail. This ap helps a lot but also keep your eyes open for cairns to guide the way.

This is a more difficult trail than moderate if you go all the way to Smith Lake. It is also longer that the stated my Fitbit and GPS both put it around 7 miles give or take a 10th or so. Nice trail though with great views of Wright's , Union and Icehouse lakes. Hike early to beat crowds this time of year as the trail is narrow for larger groups.

Lots of loud hikers during this time of year. Good hike, lots of wildflowers. Take the short side track to check out Donner Peak along the way for amazing views.

One of my favorite hikes this time of year! Wild flowers are everywhere and lake views beautiful. If you hike part way up to the top of Round Top itself you can even see Lake Tahoe. Winnemucca Lake is always a loud section with kids yelling and lots of people hanging out. Busy trail but worth the annoyances of the occasional loud hikers.

Great trail, easy to follow. Next time I'll stay on the more southern side and do and out and back at the bridge since the other side has lots of people and campers and loudness. Nice, mostly shaded trail that I will definitely be doing again.

Great trail with awesome views. The river felt great and cooled us for part of the hike back. About half way is a runoff creek we dipped hats and shirts in to keep us cool. Take lots of water 2.5 L per person. Nice breeze and enough shade. Will definitely do this one again at another time of year.

Doesn't get much better than this! Low traffic and beautiful views. I took a longer route going to Bear Lake too added a couple miles. Easy to follow.

The actual Olmstead Loop trail is in the photos above taken from a trail guide book. The outline on this map is not the actual Olmstead Trail. Went this morning and it got HOT. Took 2.5 L of H2O. Trail is adequately marked if you take the actual Olmstead Loop. Nice hike, great workout.
