We brought our three kids on this trail and enjoyed it! There are huge rocks and the history of the viaduct is interesting! Highly recommend for kids - there is varied terrain - some rocks, some more narrow paths, some wide, small creeks to step over, and lots of wildflowers.

I don't know why more people don't do this trail! It's a stone's throw from Mount Mitchell and the view at the top is spectacular! A steeper uphill narrow climb through the forest on the way up (all shaded) and then you emerge at the rocky top. The loop leads you back on the Old Mitchell Toll Road which is flat and muddy in portions—totally okay with us after our legs were burning up this peak. A great hike with the kids!

We did this hike with 3 young kids and it was hard—but worth it! Very rocky (moderate rating is accurate), some mud, several rock stair areas, and the base of the gorge was high water for us at the time. I had to do some bouldering to get around to the area closer to the falls—the kids stayed back on the small shore portion. Gorge environment is what it is—wilderness. Be ready for different creatures than higher elevation hikes—lots of flies, spiders, etc. Worth it all though with the kids - the falls were amazing.

The waterfall is beautiful. It's a well-maintained gravel trail from Chimney Rock (you have to pay to use this part of the trail), a few rock crossing areas, mostly flat and a steady uphill on the way there. We went in the late afternoon, which I wouldn't do again—lots of traffic. The base of the falls has a viewing platform.

We did this trail with 3 young kids in tow (there was a lot of carrying!), and it was AWESOME. It's narrow in parts, low brush canopy overhead in some spots, some rocky terrain, some mud, and so much view! We went early in the morning (around 9 am) on a weekday and there were only a couple other people on the trail. By the time we finished though, traffic had quadrupled. Highly recommend this hike in the early morning when it's clear. The views are spectacular! Watch out for a couple boards on the platforms that are missing if you have small kids.

This was a steady grade uphill for most of the hike, wide trail, more rocky near the end but fairly easy to do with our 3 kids. A little muddy in portions. The trick is to come super early! We arrived around 9am on a Wednesday and by 10am there were 6 buses of people on the trail—far too crowded to enjoy it any longer. It’s a beautiful waterfall, a few bridges along the way, and lovely forest on the hike. Just be sure to go early!

This was our favorite hike! We went at 8 am and we were the only people there! We hiked with our 3 young kids and it was a super easy short trail. Lots of camping sites along the hike that made for interesting sights to see. The hike was shady most of the way there — wide trail with tall Forrest canopy overhead. Also lots of mica along the path which glittered in the sun. The kids loved exploring the rocks (read more about it at the trailhead). The falls were beautiful and lots of space for the kids to play in the water. The photos of this waterfall don’t do it justice. It’s huge! Can’t recommend this trail enough. Just go early in the morning!

Ditto to the last reviewer! Great views of the falls! The trail is longer with kids (we had our 7 year-old and two 3 year olds in tow). The trail is downhill on the way there if you take the trail from the right side entrance. Rocky in parts, had to carry the kids over several small mud / creek crossings. The falls are beautiful - no place for kids to play in the water FYI - but worth the hike uphill we had to do on the way back! There are two sets of stairs, a few small bridges, and lots of switchbacks. Definitely wear proper hiking shoes. Trail is smoother on the way up. Trail is shady most of the way there — great cool breeze at the falls!
