The Romero Pools are a great reward for a rather difficult climb. In late winter there were wildflowers blooming, and the water was flowing amply in the creek. This was an enjoyable excursion.

This is a very beautiful hike through some gorgeous terrain in the Superstition Wilderness. We took the loop in the counter-clockwise direction, which dispenses with the steepest climb at the outset. There are many interesting mountains, hoodoos, and other formations. Due to a snow storm a few days before, there were still some patches of snow on the north-facing slopes, and there was water flowing in the creeks. The hike around Miner's Needle revealed poppies beginning to bloom. A very enjoyable time.

I did this in the month of February immediately following some snowfall. Only did about the first 3.5 miles up to Big Kahuna Falls. One of the other larger falls was frozen solid, and there were several inches of snow packed down on the trail. It was a very nice hike, just a bit tricky going back down trying not to slip and slide. I hope to go back again in another month when the water is flowing more.

Somewhat strenuous climb to the top of the Ma Ha Tauk range, but the scenic views are well worth the effort. This was the first week of March and there were already many poppies and other wildflowers blooming along the south slopes.

This is a nice, fairly easy trail for the most part. There are good views, especially of the eastern mountains. Interesting rock formations in the shape of mushrooms, etc. The landslide occurred about 500,000 years ago, and there are large piles of boulders remaining. The last loop section is a bit steep in parts as it climbs up and gives views of the terrain. I took a wider loop that incorporated parts of the Rock Knob, Pemberton, and Boulder Trails (in McDowell Mountain Regional Park), as well as the full Marcus Trail. There is a $2 fee to enter the Regional Park.

This is a very nice hike. Only accessible during the fall to early spring when the Agua Fria River is low. To get there, exit I-17 at Table Mesa Road and take Table Mesa Road westward for about 4 miles, taking the left-hand road at each fork. There are signs for Agua Fria Conservation Area which lead to a parking area. From there follow the trail down and across the Agua Fria River, then parallel to the river. At about 2.5 miles, there is a path off to the left that leads to the top of a distinctive hill (Indian Mesa) with light colored rock on top. The climb is steep but short to a saddle. From there take the left fork up to the top of the hill. Here there are well-preserved ruins and beautiful views of Lake Pleasant and the river valley below. Follow the same route to return to the parking area.

The Lower Salt River Nature Trail is a short (around 1.5 miles) trail that follows the Salt River part of the way and then branches out into mesquite forest and finally open desert. It is difficult to follow due to vandalism and horse damage to the trail markers. The trail starts from the Phon D Sutton Recreation Area off of Bush Highway. There is a large variety of vegetation to see along the way. This is a pleasant easy hike, as long as you don't get lost.

This is a nice trail through fairly level desert, with a few ups and downs along the way. After arriving at the dirt road, take a right, go down the hill, and then left into a lush wash. Follow the overgrown trail a short way to the Dixie Mine, which is closed up. Also, a little further down the wash are some purported petroglyphs.

Nice short hike. Highlight of course is the Clay Mine. It is now closed up with chain link fencing (although I see they have ranger-led tours on various dates). The sign says the mine was originally begun to find gold, but later a woman purchased it and mined the clay to sell in the form of a cure-all elixir. The trail goes from the RV campground to a junction with the Overton Trail.

A relatively steep but short climb to the top of North Mountain with nice views of the Phoenix Valley. I took the loop counter-clockwise, ascending on the paved trail, and descending on the rough unpaved half. It probably would be more strenuous to go the opposite direction.

Went on the Cave Creek Trail #4 as far as the third creek crossing, and then back the way I came, for a total of 8 miles. The first 2/3 follows the creek closely and is well shaded, with plenty of wildlife. The last 1/3 is away from the creek in more open desert. Look for a rare crested saguaro just north of the trail a short way past the second creek crossing.
