Beautiful views. Ample and leisurely summit, with lots of photo opportunity and a variety of views. On one end, there's a small footpath that leads to a massive glacier and open sandy area, with views of the Olympics. On the other end is Vancouver Island and Mt Baker.

Easy trail, winding path up to the peak. Do this if you're in Olympic National Park!

Trail is actually closer to 5 total miles. See my photos for maps of the route and trailhead postings. Weather was great, there's an option to switchback down to a beach which we still regret not doing - it's a simple 0.75 mile downhill to a nice clean cove.

The "peak" is a mild view with overgrown foliage that obscures the sights of Mt Baker and Vancouver Island, which are only visible on a clear day. Best weather for this would be August. Lots of broken glass and shotgun shells in the parking lot adjacent to the lookout point, which is a huge bummer.

Dog friendly! Nice and shaded. Light elevation. Would recommend this trail if you're in the neighborhood.

Great trail! Simple switchbacks up to a false summit, where you have two options to proceed: a bike path (Red Mountain) or another couple of switchbacks and ridgewalks to Black Mountain summit, where Lake Mead is actually visible. We chose to turn around and head back at the false summit because it was getting dark and we had to continue driving.

Summary: easy, rewarding, dog friendly. Ample parking and not a crowded trail. Would highly recommend.

The long winding lead up to the switchbacks is confusing but well marked if you're paying attention. Don't confuse the path with the bike paths.

Cons: Road is not accessible for the last 1.5 miles of "road". We attempted the drive in an AWD sedan and couldn't even make it to the trailhead. There was nowhere to park & hike the last leg either, so the whole trip was a bust. No other trail heads nearby either, according to 2 locals we asked on the way back through town.

Pros: you can drive 3.3 miles into/past Chloride & off the main road to see the murals. Lots of signs. They're worth the trip, but a bummer to see no hike. You **could** hike 3.5 miles past the murals to the trailhead, however. That would just make this hike a far longer & different journey.
