Kristin Mapes reviewed Stanley Lake to Bridalveil Falls Trail

Attempted this one a few days ago - for all intents and purposes, this should be a pretty easy hike. The snow has mostly melted around Stanley Lake, making the beginning of this hike very deceptive. After a mile or two in, the snow is still pretty deep with plenty of post-holing up to about mid-thigh on me. I made it approximately 3 miles in until I met the "creek" which is now ~30 ft across with no way to cross unless you want to wade through the water and then continue walking in the snow. The cool water will likely be refreshing once it warms up a bit more, will have to try this one again after the snow melts.

This was one of my favorites when I still lived in AZ! It's been a long time, but I loved coming out here to do some cliff jumping and cool off from some of that AZ heat. Definitely a fun area, make sure you bring PLENTY + some extra water.

This is one of my favorites in the area. Considering this is a loop, can definitely make it easier or harder on yourself.

Going directly from the trail head straight up to church's pond (clockwise on the loop) is the more difficult way to go. The switchbacks are a challenge and leave many people exhausted. However, then you're pretty much done with the up at that point and the rest is mostly downhill with a gradual descent. It is also much more popular just to go up to church's pond and back, so this side of the loop is always more crowded.

I prefer to go the other direction (counter clockwise). The backside after you leave the whites creek area is so quiet and not hiked nearly as often. It is a gradual uphill until you reach the pond, and then a steep decline back to the trailhead which can be hard on the knees There is sometimes some snow left on the backside of the hills, so be careful where you step during the early spring months. Given it is lower in elevation than some of the other hikes in the area, it is more accessible in April and May.

You do have to cross the creek 3 times on the backside of the loop, none of which are particularly challenging unless you have a temperamental dog that tries to stick her legs between the logs instead of just wading across.

It's not the hike's fault there was too much snow.

It is absolutely gorgeous up there! And so quiet. I went on a beautiful blue bird day, crisp and sunny. This was my first time hiking in the Sawtooth wilderness and couldn't believe how lightly tracked the trail was, if it even was the trail.

I followed someone's path about 2.5 miles in before their trail abruptly ended at a canyon. Considering there was no return footprints, I can only assume...
    1. They were eaten by a bear,
    2. They fell into the canyon or
    3. I'm just an idiot and couldn't see where they actually went.

Either way, would love to come back someday and try this hike again when all the snow melts.

Over the last few months, I've done this hike probably about 10 times. It is one of my go-to hikes when I want something quick that still has a bit of challenge. The way up is pretty steep, but is doable with the switchbacks. Excellent views from the top. The pond is always nice, but limited shade. The trail can be quite crowded on the weekends, so plan accordingly.

Beautiful hike! Trail is well maintained and everyone is super friendly. Mr. Baldy "peaks" at the Mt. Rose wilderness area with incredible views of the lake. The climb up was very gradual - would have rated this more of a moderate hike. I took the Tahoe Rim Trail the entire way there, but there are a few other side roads that will shorten the hike a bit.

Beautiful trail! The snow was pretty packed so the snow shoes weren't completely necessary, but I was still really thankful I had them at several points throughout the hike. My dog loved it too! Would definitely love to do this hike again, both in snow and warmer weather.
