Kim Braley reviewed Profile Trail to Calloway Peak

This one has it all....great views, length, technical elements. Be prepared to spend several hours doing the hike if you're going to Calloway's peak and back. It joins the Grandfather Trail in time to get some of the best elements - the chute, the ledge and the alpine meadow...not to mention the peak. If it's been raining, the lower couple of miles gets pretty slippery due to the clay. The steps added to the new section (trailhead to where it joins the old trailhead) help with traction. Fantastic hike!!

Lovely walk through the woods. Every trail on the Cone Estate is worth doing - they are all well-maintained and beautiful. This route in particular has a chance of seeing wildlife - we saw two fawns and many chipmunks and birds. It's long enough to get some cardio, but not strenuous by any means. Highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a peaceful walk in the woods. Getting to sit in one of the rockers on the manor's porch and chat with a stranger (new friend) is an added bonus!

Love this trail! Any time we're in the Blowing Rock area, this trail is on the must-do list. It's long, but gradually sloping - well-maintained and wide enough to share with others on foot or horseback. The meadow is gorgeous - during the summer months, it is full of milkweed and butterflies. Views of the surrounding mountains are excellent. From the meadow to the tower, it's a nice walk with switchbacks and plenty of flowers. Any of the Cone trails are worth doing!

Could you ask for a more beautiful ~1 mile route to walk or run? I don't think so. The path is crushed gravel and relatively even - the views are stunning, even in the fog. Absolute heaven.

I'm not sure that I would rate this trail as hard, but it there are a lot of roots and rocks. It's literally straight down to the Cascades, Glen Burney and Glen Marie falls views, then, of course, straight back up to the trail head. The only reason I rated it a 4 instead of a 5 is due to the bridge outage, which causes you to (very carefully) have to cross the river through some pretty active water. There are also a couple of spots where the trail has given way on the right, leaving a pretty narrow passage. All in all, this hike is worth doing!

I'm not sure I would classify this trail as "hard," but it's definitely got some elements of difficulty, especially near the falls. There are some uphill climbs that can leave you a bit breathless, but the falls and the rocks are beautiful. If you hike the trail counter-clockwise, you will get to the falls (along with Hebron Falls) in a mile and a half or so, leaving the easier portion for the end. There are rhododendron thickets, a open meadow-like area, camping area and fir forest to be enjoyed near the end. This is a really beautiful hike!

This is THE best section of the Tanawha Trail (Rough Ridge to Wilson Creek). The views from the boardwalk and the summit are unrivaled along the Tahawha, and the underwood garden (about .25 miles south of the summit heading toward Wilson Creek) is amazing - flowing plants line the path with butterflies and hummingbirds everywhere. The trail as a whole can be moderately strenuous with abundant boulders and tree roots. If you're going to hike the Tahawha, this is a must-do.

Super easy walk....I wouldn't really call this a hike. However, the artwork created by locals and App State students is really enjoyable. We were there on a Tuesday, so I can't gauge how highly trafficked it is on a weekend, but it was very peaceful and quiet when we were there - nothing but the sounds of the wind and birds.

This is a moderately strenuous, very well-maintained trail with fantastic views at both the 1-mile mark and at the summit (North and South views). This a great trail for some cardio and miles, but not technical or overly long. The mile markers are new and the trail is clearly marked with blue diamonds. I was impressed by the lack of litter along the trail. As an aside, the Ranger was extremely nice and gave us lots of helpful information about the park. This is the first time we've hiked this trail, but will definitely be back!
