August 5, 2018: Good short, steep hike with a nice 360 view at the top. The only thing worth noting is later in the hike at a grassy, open area the trail disappears, but it picks up off to the right and is easy to see with a little scanning.

July 28, 2018: The worst part of this trail on a sweltering July day is the exposed, steep mountainside of the last ~1,000 feet of elevation gain but it's inundated with wildfowers and butterflies so it's not all bad. The forest up til then is not crazy steep for the most part, and quite gorgeous to note. This is a rather uneventful hike, no obstacles or anything crazy to traverse.
Snow free. Bug spray is a must or they'll carry you off!

July 22, 2018: Short huff'n'puff to some amazing views!

Get to the TH early it fills up fast; a little before nine and it was already half full. Road is bumpy but doable in just a car.

The snow is basically all gone, and the trail is pretty straightforward. On a nice weekend expect the trail to be very busy, making for an awkward boulder and ladder climb to get to the lookout.

Volunteers were doing maintenance on the lookout resulting in 1/4 of the catwalk closed, but there are other places to go around the summit.

    July 14, 2018: Amazing hike!
Road to trailhead is rough leave your Bentley at home.
Most of the trail is straight forward. Snowy parts higher up are easily navigable without fancy gear. The summit is kind of awkward since it's all boulders. The climb between the snow field and the summit is interesting, it's steep and the trail is faint in various parts and can be difficult to find, but it's doable for the average hiker. The scramble at the summit isn't that bad.

July 21, 2018: This trail is no slouch.
Road to the TH is your typical Cascade dirt road; leave your Aston Martin at home.
Several rushing water crossings in the first mile, each with a different method of traversing but nothing too crazy.
Once out of the woods the relentless climb starts, often over rocky, faintly established trails. The cairns never steered us wrong. The switchbacks at Headlee Pass in particular are just stupid steep.
The rocks eventually give way to snow, which was easy to navigate until the final giant slope just before the summit. It looks like it's every hiker for themselves at that part because there's no established trail; all the footprints go straight up, several different routes. Spikes and trekking poles would help here. The wife used both whereas I only used my spikes. We glissaded down, because why not.
Our view from the summit in one direction (I think ESE) was obscured by low cloud cover, which was a bummer given all the work it took to get up there!

July 8, 2018: Ah yes, bugs, snow, and VIEWS!!! The snow patches' well beaten paths are passable without spikes or poles; just be cautious of the water below the paths weakening the snow, not that you'll fall to your death or anything, it'd just be an inconvenience. One dead end path to note, but it was an easy remedy.
Other than that it's pretty straight forward. I would call it the lower end of a hard rating.
A clear day like today provides amazing views of Baker, Glacier, Shuksan, and even Rainier.

July 5, 2018: Did an out-and-back to Panorama Point, didn't do the rest of the loop. Amazing views! Watching sneaker-clad tourists slide all over the snow was amusing. Most of the trail is still snow covered but a proper pair of hiking boots should do the trick. Spikes and poles not required to get to Panorama Point.

June 24, 2018: This trail being rated "hard" is no stretch of the imagination, it lives up to that classification. Found out today why it's lightly trafficked; it is brutal if you're not in peak shape. Bring plenty of water your leg muscles will thank you. The few snow fields toward the top are easily passable with hiking boots thanks to previous hikers paving the way.
Overall it was a straight forward out and back. Being so steep, the trek down is has its own special kind of charm, turning into leg workout 2.0, and does wonders on your knees (sarcasm). The views at the top are spectacular. There are other easier hikes with pretty scenery, but what sets this one apart is the sense of accomplishment when completed.
I recorded 10.6 miles total, never leaving the trail. The only thing that would add distance was the little extra walking around in circles at the top to take pics, but it certainly wasn't 2 miles worth. Either my recording was wrong or this trail is a little longer than 8 miles.

Kevin Flynn reviewed Glacier Basin Via Monte Cristo Trail

Turned around at the snow at a half mile, maybe less, to the end of the trail; it was cloudy anyway wouldn't have seen anything from the basin. The waterfall was still gorgeous, as was the scenery of the hillside and the forest below. Climbing the steep, rocky and bouldery trail section was a little sketchy when wet, but it's doable. For not intending to do this hike at all today, I was still pleased with it, clouds and all.
