Kevin Eby reviewed Rock Castle Gorge Loop

I saw a review below that said it was more than 13 miles. My GPS brought it in at 10.56. The sign that says 5.6 miles one way and 5.2 the other is full of crap. It is more like 7.4 and 3.4. Tough hike. Was just under 4.5 hours pushing hard. If I was to do it again I would go clockwise. Would rather go up the really steep section than go down it. Personal preference (actually that was my knees talking), either direction would be great. My only complaint would be there are fewer views than I expected. That said, the section along the Gorge is amazing, not in what you can see, but how far you could fall (not even remotely unsafe if you pay attention, but use caution when the ground is covered with wet leaves).

Great hike ... if you can get across the river. When they say swim they mean it. There are times of the year it is impossible to cross because of the flow. Very few water resupply options from the top of Shortoff at the Wolf Pit entrance (the pipe) through to well past Table Rock. Saw more than a few people begging water up top. There is a source if you are desperate past the parking lot a couple hundred yards down the gully to the left of the access up to Table Rock where the trail breaks into two. Not a huge flow, but if you are desperate it works. Wide variety of camp sites. Permits needed on weekends in the summer.

Enjoyed the hike a lot. Highlight was realizing there are fabulous campsites near the Tower (next time) and a magazine quality one on top. What a view to crawl out of a tent to in the morning. Amazing.

Fabulous trail, but anyone who would call this moderate must be a mountain goat. At approx 600 metres of elevation change (I actually recorded it as 675 metres right to the river) this trail averages almost 25 percent slope, with more than half of the elevation change occurring in the middle third. I would say the more reliable rating is the “most difficult” one by the park service. Poles should be an absolute must for most people. Small rock outcropping about a third of the way down. Take the time to climb the outcropping. The views are worth it.
