Short and easy. Climb on and To the top of the talus boulder field for summit views. My kids (10 and 13) did it to get out of the car and stretch out legs on our way deeper into Shenandoah and they loved it.

This is where the best views are. If you combine this with either or both of the rims this can make a great hike. A little touristy, but great views. Be careful on the wet stone and steps.

As of today some of the gorge trail is still closed.

This is a nice trail. Nothing too exciting. It gets a much higher rating if you add the gorge trail or some of the other spurs.

Nice long round trip. Added the gorge trail to make the total trip close to 5 Miles. This park is a great mix of good hiking, great views of the gorge and falls, and some touristy park areas if you want to hang out for the day, picnic, swim, etc.

The hardest part is the steps in either direction on the east side as you ascend to the rim. The rest is relatively flat.

The gorge side is still closed. But out and back on the rim side is great too, so it’s a 4.5-5 mike out and back.

A little challenging workout on the way out. The first mile is uphill. Lots of roots and some loose rock but footing is fine. Several sections have steep steps.

A little busy today but clean, dry trails. Great views. Could easily get off the trail to make the hike and views more interesting.

Looking forward to trying the gorge side.

I would rate this a five for length and difficulty, but the views are not that great. Is it really “moderate” or am I that out of shape?

It is a great hike, challenging, and some sections feel like mountaineering if only because of the grade, and it is a scenic walk in the woods. Obvious signs of wildlife- bear marks on trees, coyote droppings (?), deer, rabbits, birds, and the frogs at the pond st the top are fun to watch and noisy (during mating season). The fire tower is cool, but the views at the top are obstructed.

Nice short trail that has a tough grade to start but views are really worth it. Would not call it “hard” but definitely a good workout. At the top, a creek might appear difficult to cross, and the posting (no trespassing) is imposing, but if you continue across the creek to the ledges, that is the goal. The waterfall at the creek is also gorgeous, and you can climb down a few ledges at the falls, but there is more past the falls if you keep going. The final ledges have stone “furniture” and a nice spot for a picnic.
