Ken Reiners reviewed East Mesa Trail to Observation Point

Much easier route to Observation Point than starting at the canyon floor. On the return, you will be climbing for 3/4 of a mile or so. Very diverse scenery on the route as well. Not a lot of people on this route until trail intersects w/main trail to O.P. The last 1/2 mile driving to trailhead is sketchy w/rocks sticking out and deep ruts in the marginal road. Helps if vehicle has some clearance as in a full size pickup or SUV.

This is hard. Two groups of mule travelers I met going down and one group going up (hikers have to give way to the mule groups). The mules go as far as Supai tunnel and have turned the trail into soft powder plus manure and mule urine. Makes walking much harder than it otherwise would be. After Supai tunnel trail becomes firm. There never is any let up in terrain - you are either going down or climbing up. No places to catch your breath. The views are amazing but you better be in very good shape to go this far down the trail and back up as a day hike. Thought hike was harder than the distance and elevation gain would suggest. consumed 6 liters of water on this hike. You can refill at Supai tunnel.

hiked this a few days ago. Very good trail in that while not easy, is within the ability of most reasonably fit people. Trail does get steeper and more challenging the last 1/2 mile or so. I would bring a hiking stick, really helps your knees on the start down. On a clear day the views are fantastic and it is the highest point at 7240 ft east of the Rockies. Done this hike twice and was much windier and colder at the top, so be prepared. Can be a lot of traffic on this trail depending when you go. Overall, a great hike.

I don't know where you get your mileage but hiked it today and it was 2.8 miles one way. Trail does end at the intersection of a couple of other trails so you can extend your hike if you want to. Pretty easy trail with a few scenic areas. Would be a good family hike if kids could handle this distance. You could do the hike in tennis shoes.

As a 64 yr old this is a perfect hike for me. Not too hard but not easy either. Last 1/2 mile is definitely more challenging than the rest of the way up. Done this hike twice. Both times was a lot colder & windier at the top. Be prepared for that.

A realitively easy hike I did in mid-Sept with a few steeper sections. An out & back switchback trail that is easy to follow. Actual hiking time out and back took me 3 hrs. Views at top are fantastic looking toward Old Faithful in the distance and the Teton's further. Windy at top so feels much colder, especially if you stop for picnic lunch like I did.

Good family hike. Trail is steep but easy to navigate and a good pair of walking shoes is all that is required. Need to scramble up the rock at the top - at 63 yrs old got on hands & knees for a few feet a couple of times to eliminate risk of slipping & falling. Was very windy & much colder on the top so be prepared for that. Fantastic views at the top.

This hike from St. John's College parking lot is 7.4 miles not the 6 miles listed. First 2/3 of hike is climbing interspersed with easy sections. Last 1/3 is more difficult and trail becomes more rocky & challenging. Definitely wear some good hiking shoes or boots. Views at top overlook Santa Fe and are fantastic. Was extremely windy at the top on day I was there which made it feel much colder than temp would indicate. Enjoyable hike if you are in good shape as it was more challenging than I expected.

Good hike. Fairly steady climb but not too long or technical. Easy to follow trail. Fairly heavy traffic. Does go to over 11,000 ft in elevation so altitude can negatively impact anyone not acclimated or not in decent shape.
