Ken Johnson reviewed Upper Yosemite Falls Trail

Great hike, but don’t underestimate the challenge. In October the wind shoots up from the Valley and is cold. Short jump up so keep a light pack as every pound counts on the relentless switchbacks. This is a essential hike to add the your Yosemite inventory. Have fun.

As consistently said the 1st 3.8 or so are all up tough switchbacks little chitchat and grind. Then you hit a very cool forest hike. 3 of us went up in the beginning of October, started from Camp 4 at 5:15 AM, out and back in 10 hours. We stopped for lunch on Eagle Peak and just to chill on El Cap. We maintain a strong pace. 4 liters of water is plenty that time of year, probably 5 in summer heat. Watch the pack weight.

Top of El Cap is flat & rocky, but the views are fantastic. Never found the marker. If you hike in Yosemite this is a must do hike, that said I probably wouldn’t go back unless a partner wanted to go.

Trail marker distances on the way out aren’t even close, 3.7 is more like 4.5 so don’t dilly dally if you need to get off the rock.

Outstanding hike with amazing views and bit of a different perspective of the Valley. Do not expect an easy hike, the climb up for the first 3.8 miles on the “micro switch-backs” is a grind. We went 2 days ago so it was cool/cold. I took a recommended 5 liters of h2o, should have been 4 and dropped the weight. This hike is major “up” so watch your pack weight.

Once you get to Eagle Peak the 360 degree outlook is breathtaking, kickback, chill and enjoy the accomplishment. We left the Valley at 5:15 AM and made it up in 4 hours, having stopped at Upper Yosemite Falls.

On the way down 35% you can bomb down through the forest. Then you hit the granite staircase and the pace slows simply because of footing.

Great time. Three of us ranked this hike in term of difficulty as 1.) Half Dome 2.) Eagle Peak 3.) CR. Hope this helps - enjoy this must do hike.

Started at 6:30 am on 8/29 which was key because temps hit 90+ by noon. Round trip was 4.5 hrs. First mile is beautiful with Sunrise and moving water. Next couple of miles are a grind primarily due to the short switchbacks, more like going up a ski run than a 14er.

The last 1/4 mile, approach to Summit is a scramble over boulders which takes a certain degree of athletic coordination. A slip and fall on this portion could be an issue, given where you are. I took a 5 minute break before heading up this portion and thought of the cables going up Half Dome in Yosemite.

Cool hike, good views and a fun morning.

Rocky trail to run on, but cool. At dawn alone bear spray makes for a good running buddy.

Cool slide down coming from Wolf Ridge. Winter beat this path with a wicked stick, watch out for ankle benders. Definitely worthwhile.

Ran up to Wolf Ridge from Rodeo Lagoon, the views were stunning. If you are heading up from the beach be prepared for a tough climb.

Spectacular, after the big rain waterfalls were rockin. In the canopy of the big trees then pop out into one of the most spectacular views around. Great time.
