Kelly Barrett reviewed Skull Crack Trail

Nice quick hike trail. I had my two dogs but the trail is pretty skinny at some parts so we kept moving out of people's way. Trail is moderately flat for the beginning then goes up a bit then down again. The climb back up isn't terrible and the bottom by the stream is beautiful. Was there a few weeks ago and there was still a solid amount of fish (most alive but some where dead as it's getting to the end of the season). Lots of people at the bottom but you can keep hiking down to find more solitude.

Beautiful hike. Steep but manageable. I wouldn't rate this as a hard peak but take your time. Mostly shaded so it went from chilly to warm as you got into the sun. Did this last Sunday and it was a nice 70 outside. Gorgeous views of the valley and take your time at the top to enjoy. Your hard work will pay off!

Best hike for the view. Its all uphill, so bring water and a hat, as the whole trail is exposed. Its rated as strenuous in the NP guide, but I think thats too keep the tourists at bay. I can see this being a hike people have to be rescued from....

Short hike, but uphill, but once at the top, you get a beautiful 360 degree view of Joshua tree NP and beyond. Some annoying tourists were at the top flying a drone, which was incredibly annoying so please respect the land and your fellow hikers. The constant buzzing and whipping of drones is incredibly distracting and annoying. Sorry I don't care about the dumb youtube video you are going to make or your instagram likes on a selfie of you. STOP IT. (enough ranting :} ).

Beautiful hike. BRING WATER! I don't know how many tourist hikers I saw that were climbing with nothing...this is not for the faint of heart. Its doable, but my suggestions would be the following: Hat (wide brimmed preferably), water (and extra water), and trekking poles. I went on a Saturday in June later in the day (around 2 PM) and most of the people were coming down the mountain. There is still a far amount of snow, so be aware of the drop offs. There is one part in particular that can be a it nerve wracking, but if all those NP tourist can get around it, you'll be fine. Its about less than a foot wide snow path with a shear drop off on the east side, so be careful and take your time. It can be tough with a lot of tourists thinking its a game, so I waited until about 17 people came down who I thought were going to slide down the slope before I headed up. The peak is beautiful and you can go from the top to the very top where you have to do a bit of bouldering, but the spires get you away from the crowds and give you spectacular 360 degree view of the area. You can even see Mt. Shasta in the distance! To avoid the crowds, I advise early morning or later in the day. When I came down I only passed maybe 5 people coming up the trail so the trail was fairly secluded on my downward trek. Gorgeous hike!

Just a smidge of snow left on parts of the trail. Most of it you can go around, so it doesn’t add much issue to the trail. Summited 6/16/18. Be aware, after you reach the lake, the trail is basically a scramble and ‘make your own’ up to the 1st main scramble, so please tread lightly and try to follow the path that is already defined. When we hiked up, there were people coming down all over the place, so remember to try to make the least amount of impact. From the bottom of the 1st scramble, its a false summit, so make sure you prepare. Its a rock crawl on and off from there. Once you make it over the 1st ridge, you’ll slowly climb up to the final ascent. Again, you’ll make your own path across the rock wall ridge to the bottom of the peak. Then you’ll climb to the top for a view that is just amazing. Worth the work. Next time, I would probably camp at the lake because it was hard on the knees going up and down in one day. Absolutely beautiful!

Beautiful Drive. We have a upgraded Toyota Tacoma and some of the spots were tight, but overall a beautiful secluded drive.
