Katie Smith reviewed McNeil Point Trail

Started from the Top Spur trailhead Saturday afternoon around 2PM and started hiking to McNeil point to camp for the night as our goal. We soon encountered the worst swarming of »BITING« flies I have ever experienced in my life. They were unrelenting and unphased by bug repellent. The entirety of the Top Spur trail and the short section of the PCT you hike for a second and the Timberline Trail as well was completely plagued by the pests. It wasn’t until we got above tree line on the McNeil Point trail did we find any respite. If not, we would’ve definitely bailed. The flies didn’t seem as bad coming back down which could’ve been due to our faster pace because they still did swarm if we stopped or slowed down at all.

Oh! And to top it all off when we got back to the trailhead we discovered our car had been broken into and everything, even just stupid stuff had been ripped off— yay...

Really too bad about the flies and the theft because McNeil Point is beautiful and we enjoyed a rather spectacular sunset and time above treeline. However, I don’t think I’ll be coming back to do this trail again anytime soon because of the flies on the approach and the criminal acts of others.

It was alright. The metal fencing/grating on the trail to mitigate erosion was super annoying; very easy to get tripped up by it and trekking poles snagged in it. I feel like there are better ways to prevent erosion. It was raining so I didn't get to see any views though the fog was really cool. Felt like we were at higher elevations. Met a very friendly salamander along our way too which was fun! But I may only do this hike again just to do it when it's not raining so I can see those views but otherwise I wasn't too impressed with the trail management.

Great trail with awesome views. Did this hike just the other day so no wildflowers but the autumn color in the trees and shrubbery is starting to debut. I would guess that within the next couple weeks the autumn leaves will look amazing. The ascent is no joke though, I'm in very good shape and this was challenging for my calves, not recommended for those not in good shape. Coming down Auspburger Trail is much kinder on your knees however there are still a few patches of old rock slides covering the trail that I like to call "ankle breakers" so just be aware of that. I was fine but my older father had a more tough time crossing those sections. I'd like to hike this when there are wildflowers but I don't like sharing trails with throngs of people so maybe I won't. I hear it gets super crowded and congested during the summer when the wildflowers are in bloom.

The falls itself is cool and the trail is well maintained and the viewing deck is nice. Underwhelming short hike though, as expected being just barely off the road... Many photos of this falls are taken from below the falls, a view you cannot get without going off trail and scrambling down sketchy steep terrain. Which is a shame because the falls look so much more amazing from that vantage point than from the viewing deck. It'd be awesome if they built stairs to view the falls from below like some of the trail configurations in the Silver Falls State Park in Oregon along the Trail of Ten Falls. End of summer during a drought year made for a slightly less impressive waterfall and I will be returning when the rains return to experience the full beauty of this unique waterfall.

Amazing waterfalls, very popular and well maintained trail. I went on a cloudy, rainy, windy day in August and that seemed to discourage the crowds. I would imagine this trail gets pretty crowded during good weather in the summer months so I'm glad the weather kept the throngs of people at bay on that particular day. Being a drought year and at the end of August the waterfalls were not at their most impressive with flows being quite low and wimpy. I plan to return on a rainy day in spring to hopefully see the true beauty these falls are capable of offering.
