Kathy Allen reviewed Mayflower Gulch Grand Traverse

Really enjoyed this hike. When I read that it was up a road, I was not very optimistic. The road, however, goes through a heavily wooded forest with frequent views on one side. The mining ruins are interesting, too. The 360 views from the top of the ridge line are FANTASTIC!!! This hike gives quite a bit of bang for the buck.

Did both Grays & Torreys and LOVED it - unbelievably gorgeous, unending views from the summits! Just know it's up, up, up from the get go. Likewise, it's down, down, down all the way back. Rocky all the way. I had some very sore feet by the end.

The views get better the higher you go. Continue as far as you feel capable beyond the end of the trail. Enjoy the fabulous views all around!

We enjoyed everything about this hike EXCEPT for the initial 3/4 mile along I-70. So unnecessary! Don't park in the scenic overlook parking lot to begin your hike - unless you have a fondness for the sights & sounds of interstate traffic. Take exit 195 and either park off to the side as you exit westbound or park near the Conoco station on the eastbound side and walk across the bridge over I-70 to the trailhead. The trail is beautiful through aspen forest, meadow, and along the lakes. Be sure to continue beyond the 2nd lake for a gorgeous view down Tenmile Canyon and the surrounding mountains.

Tough - especially through the rock fields, but definitely worth the effort - DON'T give up!
GORGEOUS 360 views at the top
Marmots to greet you along the way
We lucked out and saw 2 big horn sheep.
8:30-3:30 with long stop at the top

The view at Gudy's Rest is FANTASTIC! Left early from the lower parking lot. Great shade and no crowds on a Wed morning. Really enjoyed walking within earshot of the running creek water. Did not come across a lake as stated in the description. Would do it again if I wasn't leaving tomorrow.

Thoroughly enjoyed this hike. Yes, it's steep, rocky, and hot. The views of Durango and the surrounding mountains & valleys, however, are worth every drop of sweat. We went counterclockwise, as recommended. The entire hike took 3 hours & 45 min including 2 stops to actually sit down and admire the amazing views. The trip back down is unremarkable. Start early to avoid the heat and savor the views.

The final 1.6 miles on FR 1350 to reach this trailhead is narrow and extremely bumpy. 4WD is not necessary, but it's slow-going and unpleasant without it. The trail is itself is quite lovely and peaceful with more green forest than many trails in the area. The creek crossings are fun - a couple of which are actually on sturdy bridges. The views of the craggy ridges of the Gore Range rising above the lake at the end of the trail make for a nice ending.

Fun hike with historic remnants of area mining operations. Wish I was going to be here in a few weeks to do this hike when all the Aspen change colors. Enjoyed the occasional gorgeous views of the surrounding mountains.

Loved the scenery all along this hike! We parked at the green/black dot on this map and made the trek to the dam. The road was open for cars to right below the dam, but we chose to hike the road and enjoy the beautiful views. Upon returning to green/black dot parking area, we took the trail from there immediately down to the lower lake. There's a makeshift bridge to cross the water (especially fun for kids) to continue on the the trail along the south side of this lake. Do it! Go all the way to the waterfall. The trail/road had some large puddles, but make your way around them. There are also some nice campsites/picnic areas right along the lake. We didn't see any mountain goats, but were entertained by the marmots & their whistles. Fantastic views - especially with the newly snowcapped peaks!!!

Very nice trail that rambles through forest and meadow with the sound of the creek nearly always in earshot. Very lovely - the wildflowers are past their peak, but a few are still blooming. We really enjoyed this peaceful hike. No big feature at the end, but very pleasant and scenic.

Some pretty views from up on the Ridge Trail portion of the hike, but not my favorite hike overall. Too much time on a service road and too exposed - both on the Meadow & Ridge Trails. Dogs will bake on this trail in summer unless its done early in the morning.

My dog & I totally enjoyed this very easy hike this morning. I'm not understanding the comments below about the trail not being marked. It was very clearly marked and quite obvious. I recommend doing this trail in the morning while the sun filters through the trees - very pretty. Several babbling brooks for dogs to get drinks. Perfect trail for young children. Rumor has it that a bull moose has been spotted lately swimming across the lake.

I love this trail! Yes, it is very steep. Yes, there is loose gravel. That's why the information states that it's "difficult". That being said, my husband & I are late 50s flatlanders from TX and we did not slip & slide up or down the trail. All I can imagine is that people who have this problem are not wearing hiking shoes and/or are not using their God-given brains to plan their steps. Unless you are young and/or agile, gym shoes are not a good choice for a steep trail rated "difficult". Get some hiking shoes, hike slowly, plan your steps, and enjoy the views along the way on this one as well as as the top! As others have said, once you've made the trek, go beyond the cairn all the way up to the highest point. Fantastic views!!!

We started this hike from the Lily Pad Lake trailhead off Ryan Gulch Road in Silverthorne. Very nice hike. A fair amount of rocks in trail and some log bridges make it a fun hike for kids. Our dog loved it, too! Good views overlooking Dillon Reservoir.

Fabulous trail!!! I would rate it at the challenging end of "easy" as it is a slow, continuous climb once the initial descent is over. Our bodies got a definite aerobic workout on the ascent. The entire hike is scenic with wildflowers galore and mountain ranges all around. The payoff at the end is amazingly unique! The descent is steady, gradual, and quite easy. Put Shrine Ridge Trail on your "must do" list!
