This was a very peaceful trail that was indeed lightly trafficked when I was there. It roams through prairies with Donald Lake also there. There were several very open spaces that confused me, but everything was very well laid out in terms of organization.
There were a handful of people running on the trails, which I think would have been just as good as walking given this is a very level trail. There were also a number of horses out on the trail, and this is mostly a good trail for them or a large family given the wide breadth that people can take on this light trail.
Overall, this was not my favorite Madison hike to go to alone, but I could imagine with a group this would be a fun one to chat while walking or perhaps for a trail run.

This was a very pretty series of trails. I started out at the Observatory per recommendation from the people at the park entrance.
The Red Bird Trail is really nice sitting up in the cliffside. The trail itself can be rather boring since it is very level and does not wind much. There are several non-designated trails though that are quick on-off if desired to get a more challenging trail that is right at the edge of the cliffside with gorgeous views of Lake Winnebago.
I added on the Lime Kiln Trail today for a little extra and this was perfect going straight up to the lake. There was a very pretty stream that ran from the top where I had seen it on the Red Bird Trail down to the water. This was really pretty to see this continuity. The weather was quite unpredictable and the trail was very soggy. I was excited because I finally got to test how waterproof my new boots are. Many people looked quite annoyed with the sheer amount of mud on the lower part of the trail.
Overall this was a well-organized series of trails. The only complaint that I had was that there was no "You are here" dot whenever I came across a map aside from when I was starting the Overlook trail. There were quite a number of people out there hiking, and it was a mostly clean park. Great place for a decent day hike.

Overall, a quiet path with some beautiful trees all around. I wish that I could have been here in the spring or summer when everything would have been blooming. Even after the leaves have fallen, I could tell how pretty everything would have been at a different time of year.
This is a nice, gentle rolling trail that is mostly a mowed path that goes up and down through the edges of the forest. The trial is very well-labeled with maps at intersections to help with finding a direction. There is a guidebook for the long trail, but I was just out for introspection.
The downsides are that I wish there were better vistas overall. Also, the proximity to the highway meant that I could hear it in the background for about half my hike.

Very peaceful trail. There has been a lot of work that has been done to make these trails. The current map that is on their website is hard to read, but a map is really unnecessary for a trail like this where everything ends up looping back together peacefully. I was surprised with how smooth the inclines were. The overlooks are either over cow fields or the small lake, which was absolutely pleasant on an early fall day.
Hopefully there will be a little work on the entrance of the trail. I could not see that there was a staircase going up to the trail right beside the sign about "Green Camping".

This was a well-maintained trail with great markers. Both the skiing trails and the hiking predominately trails were clear and appropriately challenging. The bluffs and overlooks were absolutely gorgeous. My only problem was that I can't tell if I ever did find the East Overlook. Over where the camping sites are located, the markers are not nearly as good as the rest of the trail. Also, the "shelter" that is marked on the map is little more than a lean-to that was not well-maintained as compared to the rest of the other locations. It is also right next to a lot of signs that say "no trespassing".
The fall colors were just starting to appear, and this made the overlooks like absolutely gorgeous. The prairies were already turning reddish. Also, with it being officially fall now, there are very few bugs out.

Nice hike overall for the middle of Wisconsin. The leaves were just starting to change colors as I approached the forest, so I was really excited to see all the foliage. There were so many mushrooms throughout the entire park that we could see that it made it a fun game to play. We hiked the South, Ridge, and Central trails. It was a nice hike where we only saw about two groups on our entire morning here.
Very peaceful and contemplative environment. The forest is well taken care of, and the ridge was absolutely beautiful. Such a nice place to go for a quick hike.

This was a great hike overall. There were sloping hills and the various little streams were all draining to make everything absolutely gorgeous. The views were spectacular from the Crow's Nest and up by Point Ann.
We started from the Homestead Parking lot which made everything seem a lot stranger when we arrived over at the main parking lot where there were shelters, grills, and paved sidewalks. The majority of the trails though were wide dirt.
The Bridal Veil Falls are pretty, and there is also another one that is right around the side that is just as pretty without a bridge going right over the top of it.

Katey Mo reviewed Brady's Bluff Trail Loop

Amazing trail! Well-labeled throughout the entire park. The Western path up to Brady's Bluff seems to be what most people take up. It has a lot of wooden and stone stairs. I took the Northern path, which was a lot of fun and felt more like a gentle incline. The vista at the very top of both Brady's Bluff and Perrot Ridge are absolutely stunning! For an added bonus, the cross-country ski trails are a nice jaunt as well. They are mostly rolling hills although a few of them can get kind of steep.
Like others have said, bring your mosquito repellent. The area is very shaded, and they can get nasty. The hiking only trails are sand +/- rocks. These areas, particularly anywhere that is steep can get very muddy and be very slick in the morning or after it has rained. Be careful. The cross-country ski trails are for the most part grassy and weeded. Almost all of the trail though is shaded which is very nice.

Overall a nice trail with a lot of shade, which is well appreciated over the summer. The greenery was also absolutely beautiful. Just wish there was a little more water in some of the smaller streams. Surprisingly, for a holiday weekend, there were very few people on the trails (averaged about one group every hour out hiking). There were a lot of people camping at the Big Paint Campground though.
Like the rest of this state, this trail was overall very flat, other than the Heffern's Hill Loop which went all the way up without a vista or anything other than the trail ahead of us. We went all the way up to go all the way back down.
The only downside was unexpectedly wading through the Paint Creek when we were on the Paint Creek Trail. Some equestrians ahead of us forded the waters. We were a little worse for wear when we came across the knee-high waters without a bridge or any easy way to cross the 6-foot plus gap of water. There is a way to go around this if you go up a little ways, but this will still likely involve some sketchy traversing and likely getting a little wet or muddy.

Both times I went to the park were rather miserable. There were so many mosquitoes, I was eaten alive, even with mosquito repellent. This year though has been particularly harsh throughout the state.
Other than that, the first time I went was just atrocious. I was hoping to get the full view of the area and had not really seen the trail map but had heard there were 20 miles of hiking trails. I went to the Visitor Center, and they gave me the map for the Horticultural Gardens. This is not the same as the trail map. I ended up getting so ridiculously lost that I had to go to the main road to find where I was before I officially gave up.
The second time I went was much more enjoyable. The hike was very quiet with pleasant shade in the woods and gentle breezes. The prairie had at least seven-foot tall flora that kept me from getting burnt to a crisp as well. The trails ranged in size from being about ten-feet across to just barely two feet. The variety of this place is astounding and definitely a great thing to come see.
Overall though, this is a quick short jaunt that is completely flat. If this is what you are looking for in the middle of Madison, you're in luck. This is perfect for families or for someone who just wants a quick walk. If you want to hike for a few hours though, this will not suffice largely because it gets old very quickly.
