Kat K reviewed Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve Loop

Well maintained trails that were pretty easy. This is a nice place for being in the middle of the city. There is no shade but the views are great. Not a great place if trying to get away due to location, traffic noise and airport noise but it was a great place to go to get out of the hotel room without fighting traffic.

Great trails. Did all the loops and back up to the north trail head which was about 7 miles total. I wouldn't classify as hard myself but definitely more challenging than most trails in Ohio. Lots of steep inclines and varied terrain with a few stream crossings. Permit is required to go to Robinson Falls which was worth the wait to receive. Take water, there are NO fountains or wells. Saw lots of wildlife including squirrels, chipmonks, deer and a fox.

Great place with lots of trails and wildlife. Went on a Sunday and passed 1 person. Beware however there are NO restrooms. Will go back again, will just plan a gas station stop first.

Great trail. Started at dock 1 to Burr Oak Cove campground which was 3.8 miles due to a late start. Great views of the lake and wooded setting. Most of the trail is on the edge of the lake therefore the bugs and spider webs were everywhere. The trail to the campground is well traveled but only semi marked, but was worth the uphill journey to get to it. Was a perfect spot for a first solo backpacking trip.

Great little gem in the city. Well maintained trail and spectacular wildlife blind viewing area at a pond. Counterclock-wise the trail is uphill with some good heart pumping areas but at 1.5 miles it isn't difficult. There is a large parking lot off lewis center rd with flush toilets. Will definitely go back again.

This trail was tough but a ton of fun. There is quite an amount of rock scramble near the summit that was difficult with misty rain but the views were absolutely worth all the effort. I will be going back to this region in the future as there are great sights, trails and campgrounds!

Pretty good trails however there are quite a few trees down over the trails further back in the park. From the parking lot that is $5 to park you go to the right of the park office and down the stairs to get to the trails. There are lots of intersecting trails however none of them are marked. Make sure you have a map and refer to it often. This is also low mileage even combining many trails.

Super easy gravel and grass trail with moderate traffic. There is a trail head on the left side of the parking lot at the end of the prairie and natural play area.

Only reason it's not getting 5 stars is because of heavy traffic. Great trail, with a stream crossing if water is high. The bottom of Big Lyons falls was frozen but only about a foot, just wasn't cold enough.

Kat K reviewed Zaleski State Forest Day Loop Trail

Completed 3/4 of the day loop, starting at Y and cutting back through King Hollow Rd back to the Hope Furnace parking lot. The trail is great with the 4.5 mile leg being pretty deserted, the parking lots were full to the brim but only passed 6 people on the trail. That being said there is very little scenery to view and was overall a pretty boring hike. There is a great vista view at about mile 5 going counter-clockwise but the vegetation is so thick you can't really see it. There are many steep uphills with little footholds but this just makes the trail more challenging. Less traveled sections have trees over the trail and it can be quite narrow in places. Make sure you have a newer map before heading out, mine was older without realizing it and had location markers with different letters than what is actually on the ground. Hope Furnace trailhead should be point X not A. This created a lot of confusion on where we were and where water was located. That being said water pumps are clearly marked on the trail and campsites were large and realitively flat. There are 3 within the first 7 miles and are marked C, backpacker camp 1 and 2. Overall an okay 10 mile trip.

Kat K reviewed Grandma Gatewood Trail - Old Man's Cave to Ash Cave

This section of the Buckeye Trail is awesome. There are lots of natural features, caves, cliffs, deer, fish and frogs. Trail is well marked with blue blazes and in- ground blue post markers along with signs at trail intersections providing distances to attractions. Did have to leave the trail at sections to get around downed trees and there is hand over hand climbing in sections to get up tree roots and rock slides. Completed Grandma Gatewood from Upper Falls to Ash Cave and the doubled back to the red rim trail to make a loop. Started at dawn and only encountered 4 people and a huge buck before making it to Cedar Falls. Great trip that I will be doing again. At each of the stops, Old Mans Cave, Cedar Falls and Ash Cave there are picnic tables, water wells and restrooms. Also at Cedar Falls you have to cross the parking lot to pick up the trail again and continue up a fire road, it is not obviously marked where you are dropped off at the parking lot, just continue left past the picnic shelter and well pump and you will see a blocked road with a road gate and small sign stating Ash Cave.
