I took this trail all the way to the base of the Mohawk Lakes, but by then was too tired to make the steep climb up to the Mohawk Lakes so I decided to just enjoy the Mayflower Lake near the base. The hike was all uphill, but gradual enough, and I never saw a single person (other than one hunter who lives in a cabin along the trail) and he told me most people only go a little bit from town, and the rest of the trail has nearly no traffic. That was my experience. Once I got near Mohawk Lakes the trail got crowded with people who had driven in - I loved that I had hiked all the way from downtown Breckenridge and enjoyed a quiet trail. I plan to return and do Mohawk Lakes, but from the trailhead to those hikes to save energy. I hiked from 8am to 2:30pm, and bummed a ride back to town to save the return trip, though hiking down would have been a lot easier than up. (obviously)

The "easy" route from Silverthone exit is more crowded. But there are two trailheads to this Lake, better to get off on 9 in Frisco, but instead of crossing I-70 and turning into town, just take the next exit on the round-a-bout and follow the dirt road to the trailhead at the end. This route is steeper (why it is less crowded) but if you take your time and enjoy it, it is very doable, and you wont have families and dogs everywhere, and you end up on the otherside of the lake. If you have two cars, park one at either trailhead and start from the other, so you can enjoy both routes to this nice lake

Absolutely beautiful place, very near civilization so it is quite a surprise to see how amazing it is. Lots of wild life as well. Its like Garden of the Gods without the crowds.

BEAUTIFUL HIKE! Went with my wife and 8 year old son... ironically, the parking lot was so full on labor day weekend they had to turn people away, and yet, we hardly saw anyone hiking. Maybe they were fishing or just staying around the entrance park area?

We only went to Long Lake, word on the trail was that Lake Isabella has been drained so not worth continuing on, but this was long enough and enjoyable.

I wonder about these hike pages that say "1 mile" - this wasn't one mile, but was very enjoyable.

Very nice hike - and I did it with my 8 year old son. We stopped to rest a lot, but enjoyed our day together. Look out point is nearby and a good stop. There are built observation platforms. The drive into the park seems like it will never end, but eventually you get there. (19 miles of slow winding road)

    Fabulous hike!

I don't think it is just 1 mile... but I don't have tracks for this one. But we spent 3-4 hours enjoying the hike at a slow pace.

Read all about it on my blog: http://kidologist.com/2011/09/30/fall-hike-to-some-lakes/

Nice trail. Mostly uphill and walking on lots of rocks, BUT short and doable even with the kiddos. The lake at the top is beautiful, we stayed there quite awhile just enjoying it and eating our sack lunches.

You can read about it and see pictures here: http://kidologist.com/2011/09/21/the-perfect-birthday-in-the-mountains/
