Katie Pope reviewed Clear Lake Artist's Point Loop Trail

There's a little bit of everything Yellowstone has to offer on this mellow loop trail - meadows, geothermal activity, ponds, canyon, waterfalls, river... Added on Uncle Tom's trail, several reading breaks, and a couple offshoots to bring this up to 5 miles in 2 hours.

Spectacular hike for waterfall chasers. Mostly flat with memorable views and stopping points along the way, like Punchbowl Falls and High Bridge. Tunnel falls 6 miles in was my personal favorite, quite a feat to carve out the trail and tunnel behind the pounding falls. But don't turn back there! Less than half a mile beyond, along yet another sheer cliffside trail, you'll pass the aptly named Twister Falls and enter a calm, peaceful part of the creek with shaded spots to rest and deep pools to swim.

Started at the beautiful Horsetail Falls trailhead and did a loop behind Ponytail Falls and past Upper Oneonta Falls before heading into the actual gorge (skipped Triple Falls since it was getting late). This hike was an easy and worthwhile addition before getting our feet wet. In the actual gorge, clambered over the log jam and waded through water up to my belly button to get to the lower falls. The towering green walls look otherworldly, and going just before sunset meant there were only a few others there. It struck that magical balance of an accessible hike with a touch of adventure.

Katie Pope reviewed Wahkeena Falls Loop

A busy Saturday afternoon, so we were fortunate to find a parking spot at the Wahkeena trailhead. Both ends of the trail were crowded, but the middle was peaceful. Lots of beautiful falls - I was particularly enchanted by the relatively small Fairy Falls. Ending at Multnomah felt like a grand finale with a flavor of Disneyland, complete with a gift shop, paved paths, and families everywhere.

I did this as a solo overnighter, and those last 2 miles to the lake were the longest of my life. It didn't help that I hadn't hiked with my backpack since last summer. The headwall scramble was actually a relief, since I could use my heads to help relieve my legs. At the lake, there were lots of mountain goats, a couple marmots, and expanses of rocky slopes to explore (mercifully pack-less). So grateful for my trekking poles on the way down. I would probably only do this again as a day hike - regardless, it will make you feel accomplished!

Katie Pope reviewed Calaveras Big Trees State Park: North Grove Trail

Was joined by the slower part of my family on this flat, educational trail. Very crowded in the afternoon and also tinged with sadness at how easily humans can destroy something that's grown in one spot for thousands of years.

Easy, peaceful stroll through the trees - take the right fork as you're headed in to see more of the giant sequoias. We stopped to observe the biggest tree at the end, but were almost instantly set upon by swarms of mosquitos so bug spray may be advised.

Good for birding - enjoyed watching the fledgling bald eagle stretch its wings and its parent - but not terribly exciting otherwise. The smells from the nearby treatment plant and the inability to walk around the whole island were major detractors.

Took advantage of another beautiful Sunday to leisurely stretch our legs. Got a later start around 3 so the trailhead was no longer full. No snow on the trail and the sun was just about to dip behind the mountains when we arrived at the frozen lake. The rocks we threw broke occasionally broke through the ice, making pale air bubbles that skated under the surface like ghosts seeking escape.
