Kali Redmond saved Dune Climb Trail

Hiked today 3/25. Started early in the morning and was the first one to the lake. Only need microspikes, snowshoes are a bit much, at least until the next snowfall. I started at 6:00am and it was a bit windy. Made it past the snowfield with no problem thanks to the previous tracks......but coming back was a different story. I stayed at the lake for about 2 hours and that was enough time for the sun to soften the track on the snowfield. As I was coming back across I slid about a quarter of the way down and had to dig into the side of the snowfield to make my way back up. Be careful once the snow begins to melt it can be a bit treacherous. I would go as early as possible if the weather is warm, to make sure the snow stays solid.

I reached the summit at 12:00 pm on 3/21/2018 with only micro spikes, snowshoes were not needed. The trail was lost and I followed snowshoe tracks that went directly straight up through the tree line. I was a bit tough to get up but once above tree line it was easy to find the trail. Just be weary, there are a ton of tracks that go to dead ends. Once above the tree line head towards the saddle and you are bound to find the trail. This was my 3rd 14er of 2018 and I found it to be pretty safe, as for avey danger.

    Summited on 1/24/2018.
Could have used snow shoes at the base, but I was able to push through with just Microspikes. I only saw two other people and was the only one at the top when I summited. Awesome views and defiantly worth the effort.

    Attempted on 1/27/2018.
I used my Microspikes and found it very doable. Made it all of the way to the base of the lake after pushing through 50+ mph winds. Only to find that that the snowfield had not yet been traversed. The guy in front of me had 2 ice axes and crampons and was not able to make it across. It was absolutely beautiful and will try again!

I have done this one a few times this winter. It is a great hike if you don't want to see any one. Bring your Microspikes or snowshoes, especially the snow shoes if it has just snowed, not manny people hike this trail and it can get deep in areas.

I was able to summit on 2/17/2018. Snowshoes came in handy up to the tree line but I would not say they were needed, descended with just my micro spikes. Microspikes are a must if you don't have snow shoes. The winds were brutal, 40+ MPH. Manny of the groups ahead of me turned around due to the winds. This is a long day due to the added milage at the winter parking (you can only make it about 0.25 up the summer 2 track road). Views at the top are beautiful and you are the highest person in Colorado!

Completed this hike in both the summer and winter. Yesterday I attempted to make it to the lake but there was a lot of snow, I was not properly prepared. The trail to the falls was snowy but doable without spikes/traction devices. Past the falls the trail was barely trafficked and my spikes were necessary. The trail disappeared about 0.25 miles from the lake and the snow was thigh high in some places. Trekked through it for a bit but I eventually had to turn around (no snow pants or snow gear with me). On the way down I saw a lot of people struggling to make it to the falls without spikes/ traction devices. Highly recommend them for the second half of the trail in the winter months.
